We will keep all the relevant information and announcements in this page, in the meantime, feel free to look at the FAQ to learn what to expect! If you're quite lost, you can start by watching our bump video at the bottom of the page. Check below for the logistics of Zoom Bump.
Click here to join the online bump! You should join with enough time to figure out what's going on before it's your time to choose.
In this big spreadsheet you can see how many people are ahead of you, which rooms and which parking spots are available.
We will have another breakout room for questions, ask the moderator to join!
Bump this quarter will be over Zoom. How will that work?
Check your time for Bump. You will find your bump time on the list. Times are as follows:
Parking Bump: 10AM-10:30AM.
You must be ready to show the registration and drivers' license on camera.
Room Bump: 10:30AM onwards. A time slot will be given according to the seniority.
Times might vary a bit: We will never make you bump before your starting time, but we might run a bit late if there are issues. If you are bumping in a group, and don't want to bump alone, you must show up at the time of your group!
Show up five-ten minutes before your scheduled time! It's better to show up early than to be missed, just in case you have technical issues. If you're not there on time you will be skipped.
Open the list of available rooms and the zoom link. The list updates in real time, so you can use it to choose your room. If you have a laptop and a phone/tablet, we advise you to use the phone/tablet for the zoom, so you can keep the laptop for the list of available rooms.
Once you are in the zoom meeting:
You will see a list of next people up (shared screen). If/once you see your name on that list or if you showed up late tell the moderator, and they will let you into the breakout room to pick a room.
While it's not your turn, keep an eye at the list of available rooms. Once you are called to bump, you will need to know what room you want, no time to wait! (There's more than 300 people picking a room)
Once you are sent to the breakout room:
Wait for your name to be called, or notify the moderator if you showed up late.
Once your name is called, notify the moderator that it's you, and pick a room. Make sure your zoom name coincides with your name on file, and be ready to turn your camera on to verify your identity.
Do not leave the breakout room until your name disappears from the "Processing" list you will see on the shared screen.
Do I have to participate in bump?
You must participate in BUMP if:
You do not have tenure in any room (e.g. you just moved into the coop, to a room for which you are not eligible for automatic tenure, and you are not being tenured into any room).
You are in bad standing for BUMP because you have more than 8 hours of chore deficiencies, more than 3 bathroom deficiencies, or you owe a balance of $200 or more.
You can choose to participate in bump in other cases if you want to change your room as well.
How do I communicate that I want to bump?
If you wish to participate in BUMP, you must submit a form by the posted deadline (unless you are already required to BUMP for one of the above reasons).
You may be tenured into a room by someone who has tenure in a room with an available spot. Simply fill out the online form before the deadline (a week before BUMP).
What is the deal with group bump?
If you choose to BUMP in a group, the group’s seniority is calculated as the average seniority multiplied by 1.5 (so groups get a slight boost, and BUMPing with a more senior member can give you a better shot at getting into a more desirable room). Only groups of two may be coed. Groups may be split up toward the end of BUMP, depending on room availability.
All rules/policies pertaining to bump and tenure may be found in the rulebook (available at www.uchacoop.org). See especially Section VI: Room Occupancy.
Members bumping with zero seniority may not bump in a group.
What is tenure?
Tenure is a member’s right to remain in a room. Members may receive tenure by one of the following ways:
Bumping into a room during BUMP
Being tenured into a room by a roommate during BUMP
Moving into a room which grants automatic tenure: an HHH triple, or one of S-1, S-2, S-3,S-4, S-13, S-14, S-15, S-16
Once you obtain tenure on a room, you keep it until you give it up by participating in a subsequent BUMP, by missing too many shifts/rent/bathroom cleanings, or (very rarely) if it is stripped from you following a gross policy violation as room cheating.
How do I know if I have tenure somewhere?
You log in to your portal in uchacoop.org to see in which room you have tenure.
What if I don't want to live in my tenured room?
If you want to move out of the room you have tenure in, or do not want to move back into your tenured room, then complete the bump application on the UCHA portal. Once you submit the form indicating so, you then lose your tenure status in that room and may bump with a clean slate.
How is Bumping order decided?
Bumping order is based off of seniority at the coop. The amount of days that you have been checked into the coop is your seniority. (Ex. if you checked in September 1st, your seniority is around 35.) Members with the highest seniority will choose their room first, and the list goes on in decreasing order. Members who just checked into the coop recently will choose towards the end of the list, as their seniority is low.
If you're bumping in a group, then each group member's seniorities are averaged and multiplied by 1.5. That number is your group's seniority number. The group would then bump as one when their turn to choose rooms comes.
Example: Mary has a seniority of 550. She wants to bump with her friend Amy, who has a seniority of 310. To find their group seniority:
(Seniority 1) 550 + (Seniority 2) 310 = 860. 860/2 (because 2 members in group) is 430. That is their average.
Multiply 430 by 1.5 = 645. Their group seniority is 645, meaning Mary and Amy will choose a room together, as if they are one person with a seniority of 645.
What kind of room can I expect to get?
Members with higher seniority typically go for singles, suites, or doubles. Those types of rooms are usually the first to get chosen. The higher your seniority is, the better your chances are of bumping into a suite or double before those rooms get chosen before you. Most new members should expect to get a triple until their seniority becomes high enough to upgrade to something else.
I want to tenure my friends into my room, how do I do that?
First make sure you (the "tenurer") have tenure in that room. You can check that in the uchacoop.org portal after logging in. Once you have checked that, ensure none of the members involved is chore deficient. If you satisfy all the conditions, you should be able to send your friend(s) (the tenured member/s) a tenure invitation! Once they accept it, you're all set!
Can I tenure someone into my room and participate in Bump?
That's not allowed, and defeats the purpose of tenure. The goal of tenure is that you get to choose the friends you live with. If you're not living in a room, you have no say on who lives there!
I'm chore/bathroom/R&B deficient, can I still tenure someone in?
If you're chore/rent/R&B deficient you will have to bump with zero seniority. Since you are bumping, the question above applies, and you cannot tenure someone into your room.
I already have a parking spot, do I need to participate in parking bump if I want to keep it?
It depends, but if you have this question, the answer is most likely yes. People are granted tenure in a parking spot once they obtain the spot through bump. If you obtained your spot by any other means (talking to Stephen, at check-in...) you do not have tenure in that spot, and your spot is up for grabs in bump. In that case you must bump!
So, how does parking bump work?
Parking bump has three steps:
Step 1: Before bump. You must submit the form at uchacoop.org (starting ~10 days before bump) to indicate that you want to participate in bump. If you did not get tenure in a parking spot during a bump, that means your spot is temporary and you will lose it if you don't participate, if you got tenure on a previous parking bump, you can still decide to bump and change spots (only if you fill the form). Late forms and incomplete forms will not be accepted!
Step 2: Bump Saturday. Everyone that has filled out the forms must show up to bump at the starting time. Members bumping will be called by order of seniority, and they will choose a spot. Bumping members must bring their registration check and drivers license. If the name in the registration check does not match the name in the drivers license you must notify MemCom beforehand to address the situation.
Step 3: Moving Sunday. You must change spots on Sunday, no later than 6PM. If you do not move your car, it will be towed.
How much seniority do I need to get a parking spot?
It depends on the year, and it changes so much from year to year we cannot make accurate guesses. Once the forms have been turned in, we post the list of available parking spots/bumping members, and you can use that to see if you're getting a spot or not. If you have lived in the co-op for more than two quarters, you can expect to get a spot. Some quarters there's even been more spots than people!
What if I don't have a car yet, or my car isn't physically at the coop?
In order to apply for parking bump, you must provide the car's registration and verification that it belongs to you. If you aren't able to do that or your car isn't physically at the coop at the time of bump, then you cannot get a spot. There are people on the waitlist with a car present now who also need a spot - apply for a spot next quarter when you're fully ready!
What do I do if I don't get a parking spot?
In that case you should contact Stephen in Facilities. There will be a waiting list (first-come first-serve) for the spots that become available through the quarter. If you get your spot from the waiting list, you will not have tenure on it, and you will have to bump the upcoming quarter to get it!
What happens if I'm chore deficient before bump?
The deadline to clear all chore deficiencies to 8 hours or under is posted by Memcom. If you have MORE than 8 hours of chore deficiencies, then you will bump as if your seniority is at 0, meaning you will be choosing last. To make sure you can bump with your seniority restored for Winter Bump, please note that the deadline to clear your chore deficiencies is one week after the previous quarter's check out date.
What happens if I'm bathroom deficient before bump?
The deadline to clear all bathroom deficiencies to 3 shifts or under is posted by Memcom. If you have MORE than 3 bathroom deficiencies, then you will bump as if your seniority is at 0, meaning you will be choosing last. To make sure you can bump with your seniority restored for Winter Bump, please note that the deadline to clear your bathroom deficiencies is one week after the previous quarter's check out date.
What happens if I'm rent deficient before bump?
The deadline to clear all monetary deficiencies (including rent) to under $200 is posted by Memcom. If you owe more than $200 after the deadline, then you will bump as if your seniority is at 0, meaning you will be choosing last. To make sure you can bump with your seniority restored for the next Bump, please note that the deadline to clear your monetary deficiencies is always ~15 days before the day of Bump.
I think MemCom made a mistake on my Bathroom/Rent/Chore deficiency assesment for Bump. What do I do?
