Of all the strategies and techniques we can teach children, I believe the practice of mindfulness is the most crucial. The ability to stay present in this moment improves emotion regulation, focus, and increases compassion for self and others.
When I begin a classroom lesson, I ask students to simply notice what is happening around them--what do they see, feel, hear? How do they feel on the inside? For many of us, it's the first moment of awareness and reflection that day.
