Based on Carol McCloud's best-seller Have You Filled a Bucket Today? A Guide to Daily Happiness for Kids, Pocopson encourages students to show kindness, appreciation and love to one another through simple acts. Each day, teachers set aside time for their students to complete "bucket filler notes" in which they express gratitude for kindnesses they've received from classmates. Students thank each other for picking up a pencil, holding the door, or asking them to play. Really, nothing is too small (or too big) for a bucket filler note. These notes are then collected and entered into a weekly drawing on PETV, which determines the "Bucket Filler of the Week." This program is one of my very favorite things about Pocopson.
Grateful children lead happier lives, have better friendships, and lower rates of depression and anxiety. Here are some easy ideas for increasing gratitude in your child and family:
1. Gratitude Jar
Each day, reflect on one thing you're thankful for and jot it down. Have pens and scraps of paper near the jar, and pick one day a week to read the notes together as a family.
2. Help Kids Find What Matters to Them
When kids discover what they are passionate about, they can find gratitude in the greater meaning it provides. Encourage them to use their strengths to be kind to others.
