Example Zoom Etiquette Guide

This is a generic version, which you will probably want to modify for your courses.

In large classes:

  • Keep your webcam off and you mic muted at all times (unless instructed otherwise)

  • Use the Chat tool in Zoom to ask questions

In small classes:

  • Keep your webcam on when possible

    • But turn it off if there is something distracting or private in the background

    • If possible, avoid being lit from behind

    • Do not eat, look at other media, talk to other people in the room, etc.

  • Keep your mic muted unless you are talking

  • Raise your hand (virtually using the Participants tool) to ask a question aloud

  • Ask questions using the Chat tool in Zoom at any time

In both large and small classes:

  • Join the class a few minutes in advance (but not more than 5 minutes)

  • Wear headphones/earbuds if you are in a noisy environment

  • Use your official name as your name in Zoom (with a nickname in parentheses)

  • Close any other windows/programs on your computer that might be distracting

  • Do not engage in any activities that are distracting or disruptive ("zoom bombing")

    • It would be a violation of the Code of Academic Conduct and the Principles of Community to intentionally disrupt a class, post offensive or racist comments/images, etc.
