Preparation:
During Winter Quarter 2023, I embarked on the first stage of the process, which involved thorough preparation. I conducted a literature search and review focused on understanding the challenges faced by transfer students. This involved exploring effective pedagogy and practices, as well as examining current programs at UC Davis. By immersing myself in existing research and initiatives, I gained a comprehensive understanding of the landscape and identified areas for improvement.
Activities:
In Winter Quarter 2023, I delved into the activities stage of the process. I explored the need that my project would fulfill and why it was important. This involved critically analyzing the gaps and shortcomings in existing support systems for transfer students. With a clear understanding of the need, I created a purpose statement that served as the guiding principle for my project. This statement encapsulated the objectives and desired outcomes, providing a roadmap for the subsequent stages.
Synthesis:
During the same Winter Quarter, I focused on synthesizing my findings and translating them into practical steps. I created milestones, session topics, activities, orientation packets, and surveys that would form the core components of the Transfer Mentorship Program. This process required careful consideration of the unique needs and challenges faced by transfer students. By aligning the program elements with the research and best practices, I aimed to design a comprehensive curriculum that addresses the specific needs of transfer students. My curriculum and findings are located in a 65-page write-up.
Presentation:
In Spring Quarter 2023, I reached the presentation stage of the process. One notable highlight was my participation in the University of California, Davis Undergraduate Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activities (URSCA) Conference on April 29th. This esteemed platform provided an opportunity to showcase my research and engage with a diverse audience. Presenting at this conference was a privilege, allowing me to connect with fellow academia enthusiasts and receive valuable feedback. This experience fueled my enthusiasm to explore further opportunities to share my work and contribute to the academic community.
Impact:
Looking forward, I aspire for this program to be implemented next summer. The valuable insights gathered from the evaluation surveys will play a pivotal role in informing further transfer research and enhancing the program's effectiveness. I anticipate that the feedback obtained will guide future improvements and enable the program to have a more significant impact on the lives of transfer students.
