Safety First Shooting Association is a privately operated facility in Winton, CA (Merced County). They are a great partner for California 4-H Shooting Sports events. They helped us host the 2019 National 4-H Western Heritage Conference.
The parking areas are wheelchair accessible. The range areas consist of compacted soil. See their website at safetyfirstshooting.net.
Fresno Yosemite International Airport
The nearest airport to the facility is the Fresno Yosemite International Airport. The airport is approximately 80 miles from the Safety First Shooting Association. You will need to arrange your own ground tranportation.
Merced Regional Airport-Macready Field
The Merced Regional Airport-Macready Field has limited connector service (Los angeles and Las Vegas) but is only 15 miles from the range facility. to search for connector flights to Merced you can visit the aircraft operator, Advanced Air, at advancedairlines.com. Connector flights are currently about $156 one way.
The facility is located approximately 20 miles out of Merced. You will need to arrange your own lodging. Please see the map for some suggested hotel options.
Dry tent camping and self-contained RV camping are offered for free on the range grounds, however both are subject to availability. There is no internet service available. Verizon coverage is good at the facility.
The average temperature for Winton in May varies between a high of 80 and low of 50 degrees. Be sure to bring clothing that will keep you warm and dry. The ranges are open areas and there will be overhead shelters available for classrooms.
Be sure to wear shoes that do not have open toes. Eye and ear protection are required and will be provided for those who are shooting guns. If you are particular about the type of safety glasses and hearing protection you like to use, we ask that you bring your own.
Make sure to leave room in your luggage to bring an item to donate to the auction on the final night! Your conference fees cover the costs of the meals, but other costs such as supplies, facility rental, etc. are usually covered with fundraising such as the auction. Any item is welcome—especially if it relates to shooting sports!
