Observation of Scarlett playing with Happy Little Dinosaurs
Age: 6th Grade
Scarlett sat down on a table with her mother and Emma playing the game together.
Initial Interactions with Happy Little Dinosaurs
As the game requires players to pick their dinosaur, Scarlett was presented with the choices and ended up going for the blue dinosaur. While the rules were being explained, Scarlett also followed up with various questions to clarify certain rules, game mechanics and presented a curious approach towards the game's rules. When listening to the rules explanation, Scarlett was engaged, attentive and alert, showcasing signs of critical thinking when understanding the rules and how each cards and dinosaurs function in the game. Initially, she found the game confusing as the rules were not too clear, especially with when to use the action cards during gameplay. As the game progresses, she was much more comfortable with the rules and played it very well.
During Gameplay
During the gameplay, Scarlett is extremely aware of her opponent's actions. Sometimes even more focused on her opponents than herself. On multiple occasions when she was playing the game, she reminded her mother or even Emma to move their pieces when the round ended, but sometimes forgets to move her own piece while doing so. On top of that, she is very verbal and takes a center role when playing the game, often saying sentences like "ah the disaster card goes to you!" or "yay I got more points, I win!". This highlights her confidence in speaking and carrying herself, while being engaged and immersed in the game. Also, she often makes her card dealing choices with no influence from others, other than those that do not fit in the rule of the game. As she is new to the game, she does a great job at clarifying rules on whether if certain cards are allowed to be played on certain scenarios. In most cases, she deals the cards that has the highest number value to beat opponents and avoid landing the disaster card on her side. However, Scarlett has a tendency to only look at the numbers on the card and overlook the card effects. It is also evident that Scarlett has her cards organized in a way where she will stack and line them up properly instead of having it all over the desk. In addition, when playing with us and her mother, it seems that Scarlett acts in a more reserved way, not loud and hyped up as compared to when she was playing with her friends at school.
