Project Description

This project is a written letter to the author’s future niece when she graduates from high school and starts her journey to college. After years of being hidden in his college materials, he gives it to his niece as she is going away to college in the Fall. The letter talks about the author’s journey to discover and come to understand Filipinx American history. The author uses the letter to critique the missing Filipinx American history within the context of transnational struggle. He was inspired by James Baldwin’s piece, My Dungeon Shook, as he wanted to share how hard Filipinx American have to find their ethnic history which could shape their own identity. The author was also inspired by Isao Fujimoto’s work with the community at UC Davis and the Department of Asian American Studies in that specific university. The author wanted to show that by discovering his ethnic history, he was able to help out in his own community as he fights for Filipinx American rights.
