Turn of the Century

Near the turn of the century, the Asian American experience had a complicated coming of age as ideas of the "model minority" spread. Despite this, the term and identification of "Asian American" expanded, establishing a new body politic. As Asian Americans grow to identify with this demographic, new perspectives, narratives, and complications continue to nuance and contrast our conventional understandings of who and what Asian America is. Additionally, the sense of solidarity with BIPOC and underrepresented communities remains.

Standing Policy 1, or SP-1, was a decision made by the University of California's Board of Regents in July of 1995 which ceased the practice of considering race, ethnicity, and gender in the UC application process. Many supporters of repealing SP-1 articulated the benefit of implementing a holistic admissions process that considers the students’ intersectional identities.
