I was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin before moving to Las Vegas at age seven. When I started at my new elementary school, I quickly noticed the role of sociodialectal differences in human social communication. Aside from the transition from the Northern Cities dialect to the Southwestern one, I also started attending a Spanish-language bilingual immersion school. Although it was a sudden transition because I had no previous knowledge of the Spanish language, I quickly grew to love it and even earned a Spanish language award my first year.
Under these circumstances, it only seems natural I'd end up loving language!
Outside of linguistics, I am an avid paddleboarder and spend many of my summer weekends on Lake Tahoe. One of my favorite spots is the Fannette Island Historic Teahouse. Although it's easily accessible from Vikingsholm Beach, I find the trip from Baldwin Beach into Emerald Bay an absolutely gorgeous ride well worth the extra few miles.
