Preparing your proposal
Authors are invited to submit a proposal of no more than 300 words for either a 30-minute individual presentation, a poster presentation, or a 60-minute workshop. Presenters may present up to two (2) proposals as a lead presenter and up to three (3) proposals in total.
Language of proposal and presentation: Proposals can be submitted in Spanish, English, or Spanglish.
The name of the presenter(s) or an institution should not be included, and any other personal references should be anonymized in the body of the proposal.
Presentation and poster abstracts will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
Topic/issue/problem is relevant to the field of Spanish as a Heritage Language (SHL).
Proposal is innovative and/or unique in its approach to SHL.
Mentions framework, methodology, and results, as appropriate.
Explains the relevance or implications to the field.
Proposal is well organized and written in a clear, accurate style, and includes in-text references.
If proposing a workshop, the abstract should:
Clearly identify the topic, purpose, and objectives of the workshop.
Explain the workshop’s relevance to heritage language, bilingual education, or related fields.
Describe what participants can expect to learn, explore, discuss, or take away from the session.
Provide a brief description of the workshop format and activities, including how participants will be actively engaged (e.g., discussion, collaborative activities, analysis of materials or data, demonstrations, problem-solving, or hands-on practice).
Presentation format
You will be asked to choose a format when submitting your proposal.
Presentations: Each individual presentation will be allotted a total of 30 minutes, with 10 of those minutes dedicated to active discussion with the audience.
Workshops: These workshops are designed with an intentional focus on skill and knowledge development. Presenters should plan to share information about a particular body of knowledge, evidence-based practice, engaged teaching or research techniques, assessment or research results, or methodologies. Active discussion between audience and presenter(s) should be encouraged throughout the session. Workshops will be 60 minutes in total (45 minutes of workshop and 15 minutes of active discussion with audience).
Posters: Poster presentations offer an interactive, informal format for sharing research findings, work in progress, or pedagogical projects through a visual display. Presenters will stand by their poster during a designated poster session to engage in one-on-one or small-group discussions with attendees. This format is especially well-suited for preliminary findings, ongoing projects, or visually rich content. The poster session will be scheduled for 60 minutes, during which all accepted posters will be displayed and discussed simultaneously.
Please note: If the committee determines that your proposal would be better suited to a different presentation format than the one you selected, we may recommend an alternative format instead.
