The Alumni Relations team in the Advancement Office and the University Counselling Office are delighted to be hosting an event designed especially for Year 11 and 12 students interested in Canadian post-secondary destinations. Students will hear directly from UCC alumni currently studying in Canada, who will share valuable insights into their application journeys, decision-making processes, and life at university. They will also have the opportunity to ask questions.
Event Details
Thursday, Oct. 9
Time: 11:45 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Laidlaw Hall
This takes place during the Year 12 Seminar and all Year 12 students will participate. An email was sent to Year 11 students asking them to indicate if they are interested in attending.
Stay tuned for a U.S. Alumni Panel coming up!
On Tuesday, Sept. 30 students and parents had the opportunity to gain valuable insights from senior admissions officers from three highly selective universities; University of Chicago, New York University and University of Southern California. If you would like to see questions that were discussed during the presentation, click here. Â
Beyond the academics, students are curious about the overall university experience. Representatives paint a vivid picture of campus life. For students who have a particular field of study in mind, these presentations offer a deeper understanding of the academic programs. Representatives can detail specific courses, research opportunities, and the faculty who teach them. These are great opportunities for students to meet with admission officers who potentially will be reading the students' university applications.

Jefferson Scholars Program at the University of VirginiaÂ
Year 12 students who are interested in the University of Virginia should consider applying to be nominated for the Jefferson Scholars Program. UCC can nominate one student. Candidates are selected based on their demonstrated excellence and exceptional potential in the areas of leadership, scholarship and engaged citizenship. Recipients receive the entire cost of attendance at UVA and many supplemental enrichment experiences—a value of $365,000. Interested students should submit a one-page letter to Ms. Lopez in the University Counselling Office by Thursday, Oct. 9, at 4 p.m., explaining why they are a good candidate for the scholarship.
Boston University Trustee Scholarship
Year 12 students applying to Boston University are encouraged to explore the Trustee Scholarship. The Trustee Scholarship is Boston University’s most distinguished merit scholarship available to incoming students. The goal of the Trustee Scholarship is to enable students to pursue their passions, no matter where they lead. Scholars are enrolled in colleges across the BU campus and work in an incredible array of disciplines, including: television and film writing, neuroscience, acting, Chinese language and literature, biomedical engineering, and linguistics. Trustee scholars are actors, activists, and entrepreneurs. They're volunteers, emerging scholars, and campus leaders. With the Trustee Scholarship, students can do anything and everything at BU. To be considered, students must submit their application for admission to BU by Dec. 1. Interested students should explore more information about the Trustee Scholarship. Application details for the Trustee and other Merit Scholarships can be found on their website.Â
Johnson Scholarship at Washington & Lee
The Johnson Scholarship is one of the premier merit-based scholarship programs in the country. It recognizes and rewards students on the basis of academic achievement, demonstrated leadership and integrity, and their potential to contribute to the intellectual and civic life of the W&L campus and the world at large in years to come. Johnson Scholarships cover tuition and fees, housing and food, and $10,000 in funding for a summer experience — a grand total of more than $89,000 per year. Students with additional financial need may also see their scholarship amount increased to cover additional costs of attendance, which may include textbooks and supplies, travel expenses, and technology costs. The application is due on Dec. 1, and interested students are encouraged to speak with their counsellor or explore the website to learn more.Â
Emory College Woodruff Scholars ProgramÂ
Students who are in Year 12 and planning to apply to Emory University should consider the Emory College Woodruff Scholars Program. Applicants must submit their application to the university by Nov. 15 (unless they are applying for Early Decision, in which case it is due Nov. 1) and have indicated on their application an interest in being considered for Merit Scholarships. No additional nomination forms, essays, or materials are required to be considered. The Scholar Programs seek individuals who are motivated to be agents of positive social change across the broad spectrum of society—research and discovery, arts and culture, policy and justice work, and innovation and entrepreneurship. They select applicants who demonstrate significant promise in developing the Scholar Qualities and who show aptitude for and interest in working to improve their communities. The Scholar Qualities include a forceful and unselfish character, creativity, leadership and intellectual and personal vigour. The scholarship includes full tuition, fees, and on-campus room and meals.Â
UBC International Scholars
UBC’s International Scholars Program is for international students who have demonstrated leadership qualities, exceptional contributions to their communities, have outstanding academic performance, and require meaningful financial support to attend UBC. As a Scholar, you’ll get to participate in skill-building workshops and retreats and have the option to participate in exchange and co-op. While you work on your degree, you’ll have additional support from dedicated International Scholars Program advisors who will encourage your academic, personal and career development. Applicants must have a study permit to study at UBC and demonstrate a significant level of financial need that would otherwise prevent them from pursuing a UBC degree.
UCC can nominate up to two students for UBC Vancouver and one student for UBC Okanagan. The International Scholars application is due November 15, with the UBC application due December 1st. If you are interested in being nominated, please send Ms. Lopez a one-page letter explaining why you would make an excellent nominee for the scholarship and outlining how you meet the criteria that the scholarship is looking for by Thursday, Oct. 9, at 4 p.m.
Robertson ScholarsÂ
Students who are in Year 12 and planning to apply to Duke University or the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (or both) should consider the Robertson Scholars Program. No nomination is required, so any interested and qualified UCC student can apply. Robertson Scholars join a lifelong community committed to transformational change. They explore who they are, what they're committed to, and how to lead from their values in the face of an ever-changing world. The Robertson selection process focuses on finding students committed to making systems-level changes in the world around them, who believe in possibilities, and have the creative imagination to solve intractable problems. They seek to build a community comprised of individuals seeking to work and learn alongside equally inspired change agents with varied interests and passions. The Robertson Scholars Leadership Program provides eight semesters of full tuition, room and board, and most mandatory fees for Scholars at Duke and UNC-Chapel Hill. Scholars also have access to generous funding for up to three summer experiences and for up to two semesters of study abroad.Â
The Robertson application portal is currently open, and there are two application deadlines — Oct. 15 and Nov. 15. Students who submit their application by Oct. 15 will learn if they are invited to the group activity before the end of December. Students who submit their application by Nov. 15 will find out in early February if they have been invited to the group activity. Interested students should speak with their University Counsellor to learn more.
TD Scholarships for Community LeadershipÂ
Applications are now open for the TD Scholarships for Community Leadership. They are interested in hearing from students who have demonstrated consistent and outstanding dedication to helping improve the world by solving a social or community problem. For example, you may be helping to clean up the environment, promote social justice or fight child poverty. The application is due on Oct. 22. Interested students are encouraged to explore the website and speak with their university counsellor to learn more.Â
Loran Award
The Loran Award is one of Canada’s most prestigious honours, paying particular attention to a young person’s character, service and leadership. They identify students ready to embrace the challenge of leaving the world better than they found it. They look for young people with a guiding sense of purpose, the capacity to collaborate to drive change, an enthusiasm to grow by pushing their limits, and the potential to serve and lead with integrity.
To find the next generation of leaders for Canada, they look beyond the transcript and find the promise of character: integrity, courage, compassion, determination and a high level of personal autonomy. Tenable at 25 Canadian partner universities, the Loran Award is valued at more than $100,000 over four years, including mentorship, a leadership enrichment program and participation in an extensive network of past and present scholars.Â
All interested and eligible students are welcome to apply by filling out the application, uploading a transcript, and naming a reference. School sponsorship is no longer required. Previous Loran Scholars from UCC include Toni Agbaje-Ojo ’21 and Vlad Chindea ’18.
The deadline for all applications is Oct. 16 (at noon ET).
To learn more about the Loran Award, the eligibility criteria and the application process, visit the Loran Scholars website. Please reach out to your university counsellor for support and any questions you may have about your application.
