This April, the UCC community came together to celebrate Earth Month through a series of events and learning opportunities connected to this year’s theme: Repair & Restore. The theme invited students, faculty, staff, and families to think about sustainability not only as reducing harm, but also as actively caring for, renewing, and strengthening the natural and human systems of which we are a part.
Throughout Earth Week, students engaged in a range of hands-on experiences designed to make sustainability feel practical, hopeful, and connected to everyday life. Activities included tree planting, a beeswax skincare workshop, campus and neighbourhood cleanups, UCC’s first-ever Repair Café, the “Wild Things” Learning Garden and Outdoor Classroom restoration project, and the second annual UCC Farmers Market.
We are especially grateful to the volunteers from the PO and PPO who helped make the Farmers Market possible, and to the many parents who took the time to join us for activities throughout the week. Faculty and staff also participated in weekly sustainability challenges and a Regenerative Curriculum Secondment afternoon, exploring UNESCO’s new Greening Curriculum Guidance to identify where our programs already support this work and where there are opportunities for further development.
All of these efforts are part of UCC’s renewed commitment to sustainability and regeneration. Last year, the College adopted a new Sustainability and Regeneration goal, along with clear objectives and an action plan. Earlier this year, UCC also signed the Climate & Nature Leadership Pledge through the Climate Action Accelerator Program (CAAP), marking an important milestone in our work toward a healthier, more ecologically just, and abundant future.
This work will continue to grow next year as UCC hosts the Youth Climate Action Summit, bringing together young people to learn, collaborate, and take meaningful action on climate and sustainability. Additional initiatives will include the introduction of a new, phased Upper School Garden, alongside a range of other projects that will further strengthen this work across the College.
Thank you to all students, faculty, staff, and parents who participated in Earth Week and Earth Month activities this year. Whether by joining a challenge, supporting sustainable businesses, choosing more sustainable transportation or food options, engaging in outdoor learning, reducing waste, or helping to repair and restore the spaces we share, each action contributes to a stronger culture of sustainability at UCC. Together, we can help make Earth Month last all year.
