Boarding December 12, 2024
This weekend, UCC boarding took a proactive step in prioritizing student safety by organizing an exclusive First Aid Training Course for its students. The program, facilitated by certified VitalSigns Toronto professionals, provided hands-on learning experiences covering crucial life-saving skills such as CPR, wound care and basic life support. The school's commitment to empowering students with practical knowledge not only equips them with essential life skills but also instills a sense of responsibility and preparedness.
On Tuesday night, the Boarders celebrated the eve of Saint Nicholas Day, better known as St. Nikolaus Day. Children across Europe look forward to this day each year. This celebration is specifically popular in Germany and is typically a large community celebration. The boarders learned that St. Nicholas was once known as Nicholas of Myra, a 4th century Greek bishop who was said to be a gift giver — specifically leaving coins in people’s shoes. Celebrations of his generosity evolved over the centuries, giving rise not only to Santa Claus in North America, Father Christmas in the UK, Sinterklaas in the Netherlands and many, many other variations throughout Christian regions. Common among them is the theme of giving gifts to children, particularly on December 6 and Christmas. The boarders joined the tradition of leaving their shoes near the fireplace or front door. The next morning, they found that their footwear had been filled overnight with small presents and treats by Nikolaus.
