Year 11 students were introduced to the Extended Essay (EE) this week during the DP Seminar. Students have until October 11 to request their top three subject choices for the EE. Students are advised to use the EE Brightspace class to review the subject videos and EE subject guides, and to consider the tips provided by the faculty so that they can make a compelling case to be chosen for their top EE subject choice.
An evening parent social for Year 11 is right around the corner. It will be held from Tuesday, Oct. 3 from 6 to 8 p.m. All parents planning to attend are asked to please RSVP through the Paperless Post invitation sent out last week. If you are a Year 11 parent and did not receive the invitation, please reach out immediately to your Year Reps Gillian Fripp or Sasha Sandler.
Nicholas Cheng and Daniel Guan in Year 11 will be running an Eyeglasses Donation Drive at the Upper School from October 11 to October 25. Last year’s drive was a great success with 323 pairs of glasses donated to people in need.
Up to 2.5 billion people around the world don’t have access to glasses for their vision problems in developing countries. Being unable to correct their vision makes it harder for these people to learn or work, trapping them in a vicious cycle of poverty. Your glasses donations can help change their lives.
The collected glasses will be cleaned and sorted using specialized equipment by the volunteers at the Canadian Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centre before shipping to countries like Nepal, Ghana, Mongolia, Malawi, Haiti, and Peru to help those in need.
Any used glasses you don’t need anymore (sunglasses, normal glasses, reading glasses, prescription, non-prescription) can make a difference. The Toronto Beaches Lions Club won’t be shipping the cases to the Eyeglass Centre so please just donate the glasses without the case.
Collection bins will be placed in the Bernick Family Foyer starting on Wednesday, Oct. 11 until Wednesday, Oct. 25. Used glasses will also be collected on A-Day (Saturday, Oct. 14) at the Eyeglasses Donation Booth.
Thank you for your support.
Dear UCC Community,
Since the conflict in Ukraine, 8 million people have fled the country and over one-third of the population has been internally displaced. The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) has estimated that over 8,000 civilians have been killed and over 15,000 have been injured. According to Ukraine’s Minister of Health, 1,218 medical facilities have been destroyed, including 540 healthcare facilities and 172 hospitals. UNICEF has said that over 5 million children have had their schooling disrupted. By any measure, this is one of the largest humanitarian crises of our time.
As a recipient of a grant from the IB Global Youth Action Fund, I have secured funding to send a 40-foot shipping container to Ukraine. With the support of the UCC community, we can fill this container with essential items that are desperately needed.
Collection of items for The Sunflower Project will run from October 10 – 27 in the Upper School. Each house will be assigned a category of items (please see below) which will then be distributed to the battlefront, hospitals, orphanages, schools, charities, churches, and families in need.
The house that collects the most will win house points and will have its banner proudly displayed in Ukraine when the container arrives.
House categories:
Seaton’s / Wedd’s: Snacks
Protein bars, dried fruit, chocolate, candies.
Instant coffee, cappuccino, tea.
Kids snacks: fruit roll ups, oatmeal bars
Orr’s: Kids' needs
Diapers (children and adult). There is a shortage of kids’ sizes 5 and 6.
Hygienic wipes
Christmas toys. Note: no battery-operated toys
Scadding’s: Tools
Anything to fix vehicles and equipment, hammers, screwdriver sets, construction tarps (can be gently used) Note: no electric tools
Bremner’s: School supplies
Used laptops, pencils, pens, crayons, paper, coloured pencils, rulers, erasers, arts and crafts
Martland’s: Medicine
Over-the-counter medication such as Tylenol, Aspirin, Gravol, Polysporin, Gaviscon, Tums, etc.
Jackson’s: Outdoor gear and accessories
Power banks for charging phones, flashlights, solar lights, men’s jeans, adult and children’s winter clothing, and sleeping bags.
McHugh’s: First aid
Kits, bandages, rubbing alcohol, tourniquets, etc.
Mowbray’s: Hygiene products for kids and adults
Deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, and oral care.
Howard’s: Baby essentials
Formula and baby food (no glass jars), vitamins for adults and kids (multi, magnesium, vitamin D, etc.)
The collections of donations will be at house-specific locations in the Bernick Family Foyer starting on October 10 and at our project booth at A-DAY.
This is a very challenging time for people in Ukraine and your generous donations will make a real difference.
Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.
With gratitude,
Lincoln Dugas-Nishisato
