Prep Leadership Team | Sarah Fleming, David Girard and Gareth Evans
We are looking forward to welcoming Middle families tonight and Primary families next Thursday, Sept. 21, for welcome back information evenings. At UCC, we deeply value a partnership between families and the school. We know that you all have hopes and dreams for your children, and have an incredible capacity to support their learning and wellbeing. In your child’s education, families and school staff are equal partners; and when this occurs effectively, learning improves for students. These information evenings are essential in establishing our deep commitment to this partnership approach. We look forward to seeing you there!
A few highlights from around the Prep this week:
Our first late start and Wednesday Before School Programming (BSP) was smooth and enjoyable for students. If your child is not participating in BSP, we respectfully request you to drop off your child between 9:15 and 9:30 a.m., as that is when our faculty is prepared to greet them.
Middle students had an assembly this morning where they learned about some of the different clubs that are available to them this year including the Eco Warriors, the Yearbook Club and the Theatre Club. Students also learned about Rosh Hashanah, and what to say to community members who are celebrating the upcoming Jewish holiday.
SK students are completing their first full week of school, loving new friendships and discovering all the classroom has to offer and beyond. Lunch, recess, and classroom play centres have been a particular favourite so far.
Your partners in learning,
Sarah Fleming, David Girard and Gareth Evans

Hopes and Dreams Conferences (formerly Settling-in Conferences) is an opportunity for families to meet with their child’s form adviser to discuss how the year has started and begin to build the family-teacher partnership. Our pickAtime system will open on Monday, Sept. 18 at 9 a.m. and will close on Monday, Sept. 28 at 4 p.m. If you do not sign up for a conference during this window, you will need to reach out to your child’s form adviser personally to choose a remaining time slot. Click here for instructions on how to use pickAtime. Please note that conferences can be booked either in person or virtually.
If students have cell phones or smartwatches and bring them to school, they are expected to leave them turned off and with other valuables in their locker from the time they arrive at school until they are dismissed. Students who leave these devices unsecured will have them confiscated, and they will be returned to students at the end of the day. There is no need for a phone/smartwatch before or during school. After dismissal, students in Years 6 and 7 may use their phones/smartwatches in the Bitove Lounge while waiting for pickup. These devices will be immediately confiscated if used in a prohibited area (basement of Prep, Prep locker rooms and washrooms).
To contact your child during the school day, please call or email the form adviser. If your child needs to contact you, they may use the phone in the Prep’s main office.
The Year 6 and 7 welcome back information evening for parents will take place tonight from 7 to approximately 8:40 p.m. The evening will begin in Weston Hall. Parents and/or guardians will then move to their child’s classroom to hear from their child’s form adviser. After the form adviser presentation, families will be invited to join our specialist faculty in our dining hall to learn about programming while enjoying some refreshments. Information evenings provide families with an overview of the Prep’s academic program, general expectations and student supports.
In addition, an optional mix and mingle event from 6:15 to 6:55 p.m. will be available for parents and/or guardians who are interested in connecting with each other and the PLT .
Please see the table below for a snapshot of how the Middle Division welcome back information evening will unfold.
Please enter the Prep through the main entrance just beyond the Peacock Arch.
Sincerely,
Gareth Evans, Assistant Head of the Preparatory School: Middle Division
Sarah Fleming, Head of the Preparatory School
Prep students will be participating in this year’s Terry Fox school run in support of cancer research. The event will take place during school hours on Friday, Sept. 22. Students are strongly encouraged to wear their colour house colours and running shoes, and bring a water bottle. We are proud to continue our support for this event and the legacy of Terry Fox, one of Canada’s great heroes. Donations can be made online. Please click here to support the Prep Terry Fox Run.
Thank you in advance for joining us in supporting cancer research and continuing Terry’s legacy,

Welcome to another exciting year of athletics at Upper Canada College! Whether it is your first year at the school or seventh, we guarantee this year will be filled with new experiences, friendships, and opportunities. Perhaps this is the year your child learns how to skate or discovers a passion for volleyball. Perhaps this is the year your child will travel to Montreal with teammates or learn new basketball skills in our intramural program.
As a former athlete, I feel passionate about not only offering skill development to our athletes but also ensuring that they discover something new about themselves and develop positive character traits along the way. We believe strongly in the teacher- coach model, allowing our students and teachers to interact in unique ways outside of the classroom. We know each student is unique and we look to our athletics program as yet another opportunity to support them in their journey as a student and a healthy child.
This year the Prep will offer more than 51 competitive and intramural programs for our Year 4 to Year 7 students and I am excited to see our community come together for yet another amazing year!
Our families will receive an email with an attached Athletics Guide this week. This will answer any questions about uniform, schedules and selection process. Please note that all year levels offer different programming.
We are excited for the fall season and we will require a parent and student to sign the commitment letter for the team they are trying out for. Intramural programs do not have commitment letters. Please ask your child what they have signed up for and sign the appropriate electronic form below.
Should you have any questions about our programming, please do not hesitate to email me. I look forward to a wonderful fall term!
Victoria Altomare- Varlokostas, Athletic Director

We have partnered with ExtraEd to provide a wide variety of programs so that students can explore new interests or follow up on existing passions.
Clubs will begin on September 17 and run for two terms of 7 weeks each to allow you some flexibility in registering for programs. The sessions are progressive but flexible. Students signing up for both terms will not repeat activities, and students attending only one term will get a complete experience.
All registration and billing for clubs will be handled on the ExtraEd website. This allows us to support their environmental commitment to plant a tree for every student who registers in one of their programs. They have planted over 10,000 trees since their inception!
Please click here to view descriptions of the programs and see below for the planned schedule of clubs.
* Term 1: Week of September 18 to week of October 30
* Term 2: Week of November 6 to week of December 18
