In the dark with farm trivia to solve and wearing headlamps to lead their way, UCC and BSS students took on the challenge of the 10 acre corn maze!
When we arrived, a mist hung over the field, intriguing our students and giving the evening a movie-like atmosphere. Our students formed ‘buddies’ which lead to teams, and they were ready to face the maze. As they made their choices of which way to go, there was competition for who would be the first to find the right way out, and lots of camaraderie while they explored. With their great sense of direction, the students found their way through the maze and ended their journeys at the farm market. There they were able to each pick out a pumpkin to bring back to UCC.
Our students enjoyed the fresh air in the countryside, laughed with friends from both schools, and expressed their feelings of accomplishment. The night finished with delicious hot chocolate and cookies.
On Saturday, the boarding community engaged in friendly competition with a game of Rao Cup Softball on the baseball diamond. With most members of both boarding houses out and cheering each other on, the energy was palpable. Both teams were neck and neck heading into the final innings, but Seaton’s managed to pull off a huge win to bring the standings to 2-1, with Wedd’s still leading—though only marginally — in points. Great comeback, Seaton’s! We look forward to more Rao Cup events throughout the year.
On Sunday, October 22, UCC boarders travelled downtown to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre to attend the annual Ontario University Fair. All 23 of Ontario’s universities were in attendance at the event. It was great one stop shopping for boarders to meet admission staff, professors, and students. Year 12 students are in the midst of applying to universities across Canada, the U.S., the U.K., and other countries where they can pursue post-secondary studies that best suit their goals. The deadline to apply to Ontario universities is mid-January, but the universities are now open to receive applications. Congratulations to all students who took time to investigate wonderful Ontario options this weekend.
Did you know the flu shot is available?
Unfortunately, each year in Canada, about five to ten per cent of adults and 20 to 30 per cent of children get the flu, usually in the late fall and winter. Getting the flu vaccine each year is the best way to prevent the flu. The Health Centre is working to help our boarding students protect themselves against getting sick by providing the annual flu shot.
We notified our students that the flu vaccine was available starting last Wednesday, Oct. 18. The vaccine is strongly recommended. If your student has not already stopped by to receive their flu vaccine, we ask that you encourage them to.
If you have any questions, please send us an email.
Thank you from the Upper Health Centre Team
