Upper School Leadership Team
This past week at the Upper School included a variety of student life experiences. Our arts programs have been busy getting ready for the upcoming Remembrance Day ceremony, which will feature musical pieces as well as a dramatic production. On the pitch, the hotly contested house soccer tournament which has been running all fall has concluded, with Seaton’s edging out the competition with a 2-0 win over Scadding’s in the finals!
Year 8 and 9 students participated in an anti-bias special assembly led by Connor Chair Liz Kleinrock, and the week was capped off with a student-led assembly that will not soon be forgotten. Club and event leaders presented on a range of mental health initiatives, Sustainability Steward Bill Sun outlined sustainability initiatives both big and small for the student body, and the Board of Stewards hosted a collection of memorable challenges, ranging from karaoke performances to joke telling.
In June 2023, the Ministry of Education updated its English Curriculum based on the Ontario Human Rights Commission's Right to Read report. In response to the curriculum update, the UCC Year 8 language and literature team introduced two key initiatives to ensure students are supported to meet the requirements of the Ministry’s Foundations of Language curriculum strand.
Diagnostics Assessments
The Year 8 course team is continuing to explore diagnostic testing opportunities such as the CASI Reading Assessment and International Schools Assessment (ISA) with their classes. These diagnostic results will be used as a tool to provide teachers with individualized feedback on students’ levels of reading comprehension and fluency. With this information teachers will be able to target specific focus areas to continue to improve student literacy.
Khan Academy Grammar
This month all Year 8 English students will sign up and begin engaging in grammar modules through Khan Academy. Each week, a part of English class will be set aside so students can work through various interactive grammar activities. Students will work through lessons and activities covering everything from parts of speech through to elements of syntax and punctuation.
As per years past the English department continues to prioritize the organic development of foundational literacy skills such as oral language proficiency, reading comprehension, writing competence, vocabulary enrichment and fluency.
On Monday, Nov. 20 from 1:30 to 4 p.m. in the Student Centre, UCC will host 10+ local volunteer service organizations from the GTA exhibiting at the College and presenting opportunities for volunteer involvement in our community. This promises to be a very enlightening and interactive event. Please contact John Sweetman or Nina Piatek if you are interested in participating and require further details.
Following our afternoon Volunteer Service Expo, we will be hosting a virtual parent information and Q+A session from 7 to 8 p.m. on the same day. This is intended to answer all questions about service initiatives and tracking of student experiences at the Upper School. The Zoom link will be shared next week.
DGN-Kilters will be stationed on campus with their mobile sales van, located just outside the William P. Wilder ’40 Arena & Sports Complex on Friday, Nov. 24 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Upper School families will have the opportunity to purchase First Dress and winter uniforms and facilitate exchanges or returns.
UCC picture frames are now available for purchase on UCC Marketplace. There are a variety of options to commemorate your graduates’ final year, including frames for the IB Diploma, a graduating class composite photo or individual portrait frames. Frames don’t have to be for the graduating student as there are also a variety of individual frames perfect for any year-level student photo. Grandparents will thank you! The deadline to order is November 22 with pick-up available early December.
On Nov. 12, 2023, South Asian communities around the world will be celebrating Diwali — also known as The Festival of Lights — which symbolizes the victory of good over evil, light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance.
Through the collaboration of students, volunteer parents, faculty, and staff, the UCC Community will mark this auspicious, colourful, and lively celebration with food, music, and art on November 16, 2023, from 1 to 2:15 p.m. in the Student Centre in the Upper School.
We will also be hosting a food drive on behalf of The Seva Food Bank. The Seva Food Bank provides culturally appropriate food and support services that address the challenges of food security, poverty reduction, and economic renewal for low income families.
We are asking students and families to donate the following items:
Flour, sugar, cereal, rice, cooking oil, canned tomatoes, pasta, pasta sauce, tuna in cans, salt, tea, coffee, peanut butter, dry chick peas and kidney beans, personal hygiene and diapers.
If you would prefer to donate funds to the food bank you may do so by clicking here.
Please direct any questions you may have to Alvin Jugoon.
Thank you for your support. We look forward to seeing you there!
