🕓 Amended schedule - classes end at 12:20 p.m.
As part of the Upper Canada College Casey Fellow Speaker Series, UCC is proud to present this year’s second Casey Fellow Dr. Sonja Lyubomirsky, who will discuss how happiness and wellbeing not only feel good; they are good.
Thriving teachers and flourishing students are more productive, creative and resilient, and they show superior physical health and less burnout. Furthermore, she will expand on the premise that feeling socially connected is the key to happiness and wellbeing and discuss how one can intentionally increase their happiness, wellbeing and connectedness.
Dr. Lyubomirsky will describe both classic and brand-new research, revealing when and why such practices as expressing gratitude, doing acts of kindness and engaging in more social interactions work “best” and how small and simple activities can transform us into happier and more flourishing individuals. Dr. Lyubomirksy will share how parents, guardians, educators, alumni and other members of our UCC community can develop these life skills and habits that lead to wellbeing in themselves — and how they can foster them in their children and students. This is a not-to-be-missed presentation.

Worried about how little sleep your son is getting? The PO is bringing a renowned expert to teach parents how to help their teenagers sleep better. Dr. Cara Ooi, a sleep physician and youth psychiatrist, will identify problems and offer a practical plan to help teens get a more restful night’s slumber. The workshop, They’re Exhausted But Don’t Want My Advice: How To Help Your Teen Sleep Better, will begin with a 45-minute presentation, followed by a 15-minute Q&A. The session is geared towards parents, but resources will be available for students after the talk.
The workshop is via Zoom on Wednesday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. Register in advance for this webinar by clicking here. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.
Please note that the weekly Association Family Skate at the William P. Wilder ’40 Arena & Sports Complex will be cancelled on Sunday, Nov. 5. The family skate will resume on Sunday, Nov. 12.
What is Family Skate?
The entire UCC community is invited to participate in the Association Family Skate at the William P. Wilder ’40 Arena & Sports Complex on Sundays from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Join us for an afternoon of leisure ice time! A friendly reminder that all skaters, regardless of age or skill level, must wear a helmet while on the ice. If you have any questions, please contact Amanda Vieira-Hasz.
Financial assistance applications for the 2024–25 academic year will once again be processed by Financial Aid for Canadian Students (FACS). This third-party service provides an independent assessment of the application and makes confidential recommendations directly to the College’s financial assistance review committee. Awards are made to eligible families on the basis of assessed need and may vary from year to year. You can complete the application online at www.applefinancialservices.ca. The application fee is $130.
Current families must apply or reapply by the deadline of November 13 so the College can ensure that all returning student applications are assessed and decisions made prior to a re-registration decision is required early in 2024.
The College’s finance office has included current data in an at-a-glance table to help day families determine whether or not they may qualify for financial assistance. This table, along with the “Frequently Asked Questions” section around the application process, are available on the Financial Assistance page of the UCC website. There’s some very helpful guidance material on the FACS site as well.
Sincerely,
Colleen Papulkas
