Upper School Leadership Team
This week has been a short one at the Upper School but eventful nonetheless! It was the week of finals for our sports teams, with the majority of our teams travelling to or hosting other schools competing for CISAA championships. In particular, on Wednesday our Varsity Football Team travelled to St. Andrew’s College, falling just short of SAC and capping off a terrific season with a second place finish. Similarly, our Varsity Volleyball Team hosted St. Mike’s in the finals and narrowly lost, earning a second place finish with OFSAA looming later in the month.
We were honoured to welcome Veterans who are alumni or related to our school community for our annual Remembrance Day Ceremony. The ceremony was a thoughtful assembly featuring dramatic and musical student performances and a speech from Mr. McKinney outlining the importance of honouring those who have served our country.
On Monday, Nov. 20, our community will have the opportunity to hear from special speaker Mr. Michael Levitt, President and CEO of the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Centre, in our Principal’s Assembly in Laidlaw Hall. Led by members of the Jewish Culture Club, the Assembly will address the rise of anti-semitism, locally and globally. We are honoured and humbled to hear from our distinguished guest. Please see a short biography here.
On Friday, Nov. 3, students in Year 8 were invited to participate in the Middle School social events hosted by Havergal College and Branksome Hall. Students in attendance had a wonderful time meeting new friends —and we look forward to hosting our COSSOT peers on April 5, 2024!
On Nov. 7, students in Years 8 and 9 attended a special assembly with UCC Connor Chair Liz Kleinrock.
Ms. Kleinrock is a US-based educator, author and consultant who works in the areas of inquiry-based learning and belonging, two areas that align well with UCC’s focus on transformational learning, wellbeing, and pluralism. She spoke to the students about fostering positive engagement and relationships with others, and building a strong community by exercising responsible digital citizenship.
We look forward to continued collaboration with Ms. Kleinrock over the course of the year!
We are thrilled to announce a festive and fun-filled event for UCC and Branksome Hall Year 10 students —a skating and cookie decorating afternoon, on Thursday, Dec. 14, at the Wilder arena. This event promises to be a delightful blend of physical activity and creative expression, perfect for ushering in the holiday spirit! You can access more information and register here.

On Monday, Nov. 20 from 1:30 to 4 p.m. in the Student Centre, UCC will host 10+ local volunteer service organizations from the GTA to present opportunities for volunteer involvement in our community. This promises to be a very enlightening and interactive event. Please contact John Sweetman or Nina Piatek if you are interested in participating and require further details.
Following our afternoon Volunteer Service Expo, we will be hosting a virtual parent information and Q+A session from 7 to 8 p.m. This is intended to answer all questions about service initiatives and tracking of student experiences at the Upper School.
DGN-Kilters will be stationed on campus with their mobile sales van, located just outside the William P. Wilder ’40 Arena & Sports Complex on Friday, Nov. 24 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Upper School families will have the opportunity to purchase First Dress and winter uniforms and facilitate exchanges or returns.
More than 200 people signed up to hear Dr. Cara Ooi’s talk on teen sleep last week. If you missed it, you’re in luck. The Parents’ Organization recorded the event so you can hear it for the first time or watch it again with your teen.
