On Saturday, two UCC students, Hassan and Wilson, had an enriching experience at the Norval Outdoor School alongside six students from Havergal College. The day commenced with a delightful pancake breakfast with locally produced maple syrup. Following breakfast, the group embarked on a guided walk to the Norval sugar shack, where they learned the intricate process behind maple syrup production, gaining insights into maple sap's vital role in supporting maple tree growth. Additionally, the students learned about sustainable methods for tapping maple syrup, considering the size of the trees. Then, students were taught how to differentiate maple trees from other species and were given hands-on training on how maple sap is tapped and collected using a hand drill, spile, and bucket. They were additionally introduced to the traditional practice of crafting spiles from wood and using a two-person saw to cut wood pieces. The day ended with maple tea tasting and indulging in bread pudding drizzled with maple syrup.
The boarders took part in a spontaneous trip to Ridley College to cheer on their boarding friends in the League Championships for hockey. With lots of fun and bonding on the packed van ride there, it allowed them to grow as friends and demonstrate school spirit for both their school and boarding house. The game took a tough turn in the third period resulting in a loss for the Blues, but the hockey team appreciated the boarders support.
The boarders performed confidently throughout the three shows and did an amazing job promoting and displaying the arts at UCC. The choir of boarders was a beautiful addition to the show, which brought well-placed energy and excitement to the show's intermission. Many of our boarders came out to watch and support their friends in the show, creating a beautiful boarding moment within the theatre over the weekend. We look forward to more opportunities for our students to show their acting skills and abilities.
