Upper School Leadership Team
The Upper School has a dynamic energy this week as students complete final assessments before the March Break and prepare for major community events like the World Affairs Conference and the Year 8 field trips to Norval and the Woodland Cultural Centre. We also saw powerful examples of leadership in Laidlaw Hall, beginning with the special student assembly where Head Steward candidates delivered their messages and answered questions from their peers. The Principal’s Assembly then celebrated International Women’s Day with special presentations from our Pluralism steward and Principal McKinney on male allyship, as well as reflections from Ms. Owen (Library), Ms. Milburn (Admissions) and Ms. Fyrrar (Mathematics).
Hellenic Heritage Month kicked off this week with a special lunch in the Upper Dining Hall and Greek cookies and tea given out in the morning. All Upper School students in Years 8–11 wrote math contests administered by the University of Waterloo this week, designed to challenge students’ problem-solving abilities and spark an interest in the subject.
Dear Upper School Families,
We would like to share an important update to school operations. In alignment with our neighbouring schools, the College will be dismissing students early on Monday, April 8 due to potential safety concerns with regard to a rare total solar eclipse that will put parts of Ontario into temporary darkness around the time of dismissal.
During the morning, the Upper School will be engaged in a condensed timetable and students will attend all scheduled classes. Students in Years 8 to 11 will be dismissed at 12:20 p.m.
Please note all Year 12 students will remain on campus and will engage in supervised activities as part of their Group 4 Project in science. A summary of the Year 12 Group 4 Project and solar eclipse experience is included below.
Thank you for your continued support and understanding.
Jeff Aitken
Head of the Upper School
Year 12 Group 4 Project in science
On Monday, April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will cross North America. The moon will completely obscure the sun, casting a shadow over the Earth, and this rare occurrence will be seen by millions on the continent. The total eclipse will first be observed in the southwestern part of Mexico and then head northeast, tracking a path across the United States before entering Canada, specifically Ontario. NASA has put together this excellent graphic that tracks the total solar eclipse. In case you didn't know, this awe-inspiring celestial event was last observed in Ontario in 1979, many years before our students were born.
Given the unique nature of the day, the science department has decided that the total solar eclipse should be this year's theme of the Group 4 Project, which is a requirement of the sciences in the IB Diploma Programme. The Group 4 Project is a collaborative scientific investigation where Year 12 students work together across the scientific disciplines (biology, chemistry, physics, SEHS and computer science) on a joint project. Working in small groups with a cross-disciplinary lens, students typically identify a scientific problem (in this case, related to the total solar eclipse) and research ways to address it before communicating their findings. In the past, we have displayed student poster boards in the Student Centre for their peers, staff and faculty to read. On April 8, our current plan is to have Year 12 students working on their research in the afternoon, with the intent of going outside to view the total solar eclipse with special viewing glasses. More details related to the day will be shared with Year 12 families and classes by their science teachers in the coming weeks.
On Friday, April 5, all Year 8 and 9s from UCC are invited to attend the Year 8/9 dance and social. It will run from 7–9:30 p.m. at the Upper School and will feature music, games and refreshments. We have invited students from St. Clements, Havergal College, Branksome Hall, BSS, Crescent School and Sterling Hall. The cost of attending is $20 which will be billed to your UCC account. A permission form will be sent to students soon which will need to be filled in to attend.
Thanks,
Alvin Jugoon, Year 8 Coordinator
Lindsay Rielly, Year 9 Coordinator

Based on themes of resilience, survival and leadership skills, we are for the first time offering a Norval trip experience immediately following the exam period for the Year 11 students from Monday, June 17 to Tuesday, June 18 (2 days and 1 night) and will consist of leadership skill building through problem-solving and physical challenges outdoors. Before settling on an exact itinerary, we would first like to gauge interest. Please let us know by completing this form if your student is planning on attending. We will finalize details based on the number of participants
Please save the date for an exciting new parent/student event celebrating the Year 11s as they all StepUP into the role of school leaders and honouring the Year 12s as they pass the torch to the incoming cohort. It will be an excellent opportunity for making connections, putting names to faces and meeting friends’ families.
Parents can enjoy student-led tours and join their sons on a school-wide scavenger hunt, followed by a casual dinner and live music in the Upper Dining Hall. Guest speaker will be Martin Kon ’89, former YouTube CFO and current President and COO of Cohere, who will discuss being a leader, stepping up after graduation, and what skills are most in demand with the advent of AI. This is one evening you won’t want to miss!
Date: Thursday, April 25
Time: 6:30–8:30 p.m.
