Upper School Leadership Team
It has been a thrill to welcome back our students after a well-deserved break. The strength of our community was on full display as students were delighted to reconnect and share stories about their breaks throughout the first couple of days this week.Â
For our Year 12 students, seminar and advising time has been dedicated to looking ahead and planning for their mock exams coming up at the end of the month. Year 11 students heard from special guest speakers from the organization Portage this week, a non-profit supporting individuals living with addiction. Our student leaders and winter sport athletes have hit the ground running in preparing for next week’s spirit week, focused around inter-house competition, with different competitions occurring each day and culminating in Winterfest, showcasing our basketball and hockey teams.Â
The course selection process for the 2024–25 academic year is underway with virtual course information evenings for families, group counselling sessions facilitated by the MYP Coordinator (students currently in Year 8) and the University Counselling Office (students currently in Years 9 and Year 10). All Year 10s will have individual counselling sessions with their University Counsellor.Â

Dear Students and Families,
We are excited to announce that UCC is partnering again this year with the University of Pennsylvania and Schoolyard Ventures, an organization that develops university-level, real-world learning opportunities for ambitious high school students, to offer The Social Innovators Program for students in grades 10 and 11.Â
The 12-week virtual program allows students to learn about social entrepreneurship and experience it first-hand, while earning a Certificate in Social Entrepreneurship from Penn.
During the program, students learn how to launch ventures of their own that create value and a positive impact on society. Students learn in small online classes and through engaging interviews and case studies with other young entrepreneurs from around the world, with personalized one-on-one guidance and support along the way. Because students choose their own projects, each student's experience in the program is unique. Learn more about the program here.Â
This program does have a cost associated with it, but financial support is available and consideration is made upon request.Â
The application deadline is Thursday, Feb. 1, and the program runs from Feb. 19 to May 13, with classes meeting virtually one evening per week. You can register at the webpage above.
A virtual information session for students and parents will be held on Monday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. ET. Register online here.
If you have any questions please reach out to Paul Miskew.
The last French writing summative for Year 8 students centred around the theme of gastronomy, exploring the question of whether food reflects the culture of a country/region or an individual's identity.Â
The students were tasked with tasting food and providing culinary reviews for homemade dishes prepared by families. This unique experience featured 21 diverse dishes from countries such as Poland, Hungary, India, Taiwan, the Philippines, Greece and Tanzania; others were traditional to religious holidays or family heritage.Â
The event was a resounding success, fostering active participation from both families and students. The hands-on, experiential learning approach allowed students to not only enjoy discovering new foods but also to celebrate and appreciate different cultures through the universal language of cuisine while applying the content learned in class for their evaluation.
