On Tuesday night, the boarders celebrated the eve of Saint Nicholas Day, better known as St. Nikolaus Day. Children across Europe look forward to this day each year. This celebration is specifically popular in Germany and is typically a large community celebration. The boarders learned that St. Nicholas was once known as Nicholas of Myra, a 4th century Greek bishop who was said to be a gift giver — specifically leaving coins in people’s shoes. Celebrations of his generosity evolved over the centuries, giving rise not only to Santa Claus in North America, Father Christmas in the UK, Sinterklaas in the Netherlands and many, many other variations throughout Christian regions. Common among them is the theme of giving gifts to children, particularly on 6 December and Christmas. The boarders joined the tradition of leaving their shoes near the fireplace or front door. The next morning, they found that their footwear had been filled overnight with small presents and treats by Nikolaus.
The boarders enjoyed an evening with holiday cheer, hot drinks, and new friends from the neighbouring Bishop Strachan School. They headed out to the annual Distillery Winter Village in the historic Distillery District of downtown Toronto last Saturday. After being hosted by BSS for a hearty dinner, both schools set out on a long journey across town, where they were treated to glittering lights and a convivial atmosphere as Torontonian families and friends convened in the soft glow of the Dior Christmas tree. Fuelled by hot chocolate and resilient in the face of wet weather, we hope the boys will bring home fond memories of their Winter Village experience this holiday season (and maybe a present or two!).
