Featuring a keynote address from Don Lindsay ’76, Chair of the Board of Manulife Canada, the evening will also honour recent winners of our Old Boy of Distinction and John D. Stevenson awards for their outstanding contributions to UCC and beyond.
Old Boy of Distinction Award
Established in 2017, the Old Boy of Distinction Award is among UCC’s highest honours. Presented annually by the UCC Association Council on behalf of the College’s close to 10,000 alumni, the recipient has demonstrated a lifetime of significant achievement in his field(s) of endeavour; and has made a positive impact on the local, national or global community while upholding the principles and values of the College.
The 2023-24 recipient is Dr. Peter Szatmari ’70.
John D. Stevenson Award
The UCC Association established the John D. Stevenson Award in 1993 to recognize individuals who have shown outstanding volunteer service to the College over a number of years. The award was named to recognize the exceptional contributions of John D. Stevenson ’47. Nominations are elicited annually from the College community. The College's Association Council reviews the nominations and selects one recipient annually to receive the award — the College's most significant award of volunteer recognition.
The 2023-24 recipient is Carita Sheehy.

Another UCC El Classico soccer match, more popularly known as the Collegial Bowl, is behind us with the winner being friendship, camaraderie, and fellowship! Catenaccio style defensive play was the priority for both squads and consequently for most of the game neither team could find the back of the net. On the offensive end both teams used the wings and/or the axis to enter each other’s 18-yard box but alas to no avail. Neither creativity nor persistence could break the deadlock and it seemed that the game would end into a scoreless draw. In the role of Deus ex machina the veteran Jimmy Machado thought otherwise and brilliantly struck a first time curved shot within the goal area, following Richard Turner’s Messi-esque assist, thus honouring the capricious goddess of victory Nike by scoring the first goal. Machado struck in stoppage time again— doubling his goals— by clinically striking the ball just within the penalty area offering additional homage to the spherical goddess and justly earning in the process the MVP award. Terry Denstedt’s sharp reflexes, smart positioning, and expert timing resulted in earning a most deserved shutout! Thank you to all the participants!
Richard Turner’s speech here summarizes the post-Collegial Bowl symposium.
