Medium: Video Essay
SOI: Sharing aspects of culture can enhance international-mindedness
Why: Exploring different documentary styles and identifying specific techniques used in the medium help students become more efficient and effective at telling their own stories and helps them understand the stories of others. The documentary series "Abstract" explores the worlds of different designers and provides an excellent foundation for students to anlayze digital media techniques and explore how they help support a deeper understanding of the design cycle.
What: Students will create a video essay that identifies specific cultural contexts and links them to an Adobe Premiere tutorial.
Medium: Open
Year: 10
Why: The challenges and opportunities of today and tomorrow require genuinely interdisciplinary thinking. Through this program, you have developed core design and project management skills while delving into the technical elements of programming and robotics. Furthermore, authentic design requires deliberate thought around how and what technology to leverage and coordination and input with and from other experts. This design project gives the ability to make choices and collaborate across streams with the ultimate goal of self-direction and personal growth. The design brief is the same as all streams. Coordinate, collaborate and be sure to bring any ideas you have forward.
What: For this project, you will be completing a predefined MYP unit. It is open-ended on how you approach your solution.
Medium: Promotional Documentary
SOI:
Sharing aspects of culture can enhance international-mindedness.
Why:
Exploring different documentary techniques and approaches allows students to understand better how stories are told and preserved through media. Students develop empathy, cultural awareness, and technical proficiency by researching the school’s history and translating their findings into a concise visual narrative. This process also deepens their understanding of how design choices—such as editing, sound, and image selection—can shape the viewer's interpretation and emotional response.
What:
Students will create a one-minute documentary on a chosen aspect of the school’s history. This project will emphasize visual storytelling, voiceover or interviews, and editing techniques in Adobe Premiere. Students will analyze how specific design elements enhance communication and reflect on how the design cycle supported their creative process and problem-solving along the way.
