2024 CIMPA School: Analysis and Numerics of Partial Differential Equations

 2 - 15 June, 2024 / University of Cape Coast (Ghana)

Host institution and local context in mathematics

The Department of Mathematics, University of Cape Coast, Ghana has eleven (11)  teaching staff. The main strength of the department lies in the area of Ordinary Differential equations and Mathematical Modeling. The research articles from the  department also lies within this area of specialization. The topics of research are in largely in Mathematical epidemiology and most recently Fractional Differential equations (FDE) and optimal control of Mathematical Epidemiology. Currently, the courses offered at the graduate level are; Partial Differential Equations, Ordinary Differential Equations, Mathematical Modeling, Functional Analysis, Complex Analysis and Topology.

Expected Impact of the School

The participants are graduate students and researchers. Also, after the school, we  hope to continue working with students on distance internships (i.e. students will be assigned to teachers for supervision on their work). Numerics and analysis of PDE is not a popular topic in Ghana and its neighboring countries. The benefits of numerical simulation will enable several development of  new research areas in PDE-constrained optimal control, Navier-Stokes, etc. and appropriate solvers such multigrid, multilevel, domain decomposition, etc. So far, we do not teach numerics of pde as a course in our department and also in any department of mathematics in Ghana.

Infrastructure

The Department of Mathematics, University of Cape Coast, Ghana has 40 seater computer center.
