In one of the most magical television shows our students engage in as young children, Ms. Frizzle is known for taking her students on a multitude of field trips in “The Magic School Bus”. We watch this wacky, out-of-the-box science teacher immerse her students in learning, all by transforming them into anything from microscopic germs to a gigantic space shuttle. This immersive environment has them interacting with the world around them and exploring concepts in a tactile fashion. While this, unfortunately, isn’t a reality for our students they can still experience the magic of traveling and learning using technology called virtual reality.

What is Virtual Reality?
Virtual reality, also referred to simply as VR, provides a simulated experience that can be similar to or completely different from the real, physical world. This experience has the potential to unlock many doors and opportunities for our students in a wide variety of subjects or topics. This can include experiences such as bringing history to life with a time travel simulation, scientific microscopes presented in a 3-dimensional format, or gaining confidence by practicing a speech in front of a virtual crowd. With VR technology, students can feel present in the learning experience by using immersive environments and models prefabricated by education sources or handcrafted by teachers for specific lessons. The possibilities are potentially endless!

The New York Times (NYT) has eight prefabricated STEM and humanity-oriented lesson plans developed that directly correspond with their New York Times 360 Virtual Reality videos. The downloaded guide comes in two parts: (1) a framework for teaching with virtual reality and (2) a set of eight lesson plans, each based on an NYT VR video. It's designed to be used with or without the use of VR headsets, which is highly adaptable for all classrooms.
