Researchers from the University of Cebu Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue (UCLM) have completed a five-year study titled "Exploring Gendered Knowledge and Inclusiveness in Community Resilience for Flooding Disaster." The project, which began in July 2019, was funded by the Asia Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APNGCR).
The study focused on flood resilience in two urban areas: Can Tho City, Vietnam, and Metro Cebu, Philippines. Concluding in August 2024, it involved 15 researchers from Vietnam and the Philippines. The Philippine team, led by Dr. Mauro Allan Amparado, included Dr. Lucilito Atillo, Dr. Rafael Bachanicha, Analou Cag-ong, Dr. Kingie Micabalo, Dr. Richie Montebon, June Ace Navarro, Dr. Danielita Patindol, Dr. Winnie Marie Poliquit, Elna Sabornido, Dr. Dennis Samar, and Dr. Anna Liza Son. Working under the name Project DOLPHIN (Decentralized Operations and Leadership Program on Hazardous Impacts of Natural Disaster), the team produced nine peer-reviewed articles addressing flood risks and resilience strategies. In Metro Cebu, they identified significant flooding due to the overflow of the Butuanon River in Mandaue City and proposed solutions such as improved drainage systems. One key outcome of the project was the implementation of a drainage system at UCLM, reducing campus-area flooding.
Dr. Amparado emphasized the project’s impact and UCLM’s upcoming role as host of the Asia Pacific Conference in early 2025. "Our next steps are to bring hope and transform lives. UCLM aims to be a leader in this field, and we will continue to seek new international grants. We're not stopping, and ganahan mi mopadayon mi ug pangita ug grants [we will continue to look for grants]," he stated. Dr. Amparado expressed optimism for future international collaborations and research funding. | via Shanneah Maca and Julia Fornis
