Ohio State Nisonger Center Smart Home Discover Place
The Nisonger Smart Home is a resource that could be used to make suggestions for smart home tech items that could help students live more independently during high school and post-high school. There is everything from a smart oven to help keep cooking safe and door/window locks that are set on timers. Automatic window shades and medicine dispensers help individuals manage taking care of themselves and their homes more independently. Just the use of smart vacuums and smart devices like Amazon Alexa can change the world for individuals who would like to live alone or away from their parents but cannot.
Remote Support Technology
In collaboration with Ohio State Nisonger Center and the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities, remote supports allow personal caretakers for individuals with disabilities to monitor independent living from a computer screen and provide assistance as needed. Their website describes it as the "use of electronic equipment to support and assist people with developmental disabilities in their home. This service is provided from an off-site location, typically using home and community based waivers to fund the cost and maintenance of equipment and staff. It is an alternative to having the constant physical presence of staff in someone’s home."
