The topic I chose for this project has covered concerns, problems, and solutions to vaping in teens across the U.S. Some of these issues include unknown health risks, marketing strategies used by e-cig manufactures to target younger generations, and accessibility to minors through retailers selling under the legal age.
The Toulmin Method of Argument along with our Project Two Instructions helped me lay out my outline with ease before pulling information from my sources and building my argument. I credit the readings from Chapter 4 and the instructions provided for being able to create a detailed outline, which was the key element to building my essay.
I started by writing out my outline directly from Project Two Instructions, leaving space to fill in information from readings and sources. After figuring out my introduction and thesis statement, I used the Toulmin Method of Argument to introduce evidence in support of teen vaping issues. From our chapter 4 readings, I decided to use two subclaims to my solution to explain and use. I felt like this gave my solution(s) extra support against counter-arguments within my essay. For my counterarguments I created a table as suggested by our Counterarguments, Rebuttal, and Concession reading, which made it easy to list and explain multiple counterarguments and lay out each rebuttal.
In my opinion, I was able to support my solution quite well, although the material provided assisted in that tremendously. Based off feedback I received, I will definitely introduce my solution sooner in my final draft. I think having such a detailed outline while trying to implement Toulmin’s Method of Argument before introducing my solution came off as too much information. By mentioning my solution in my introduction, or integrating it into my argument evidence, I feel like my solution would be stronger.
