Each year, teachers from around the state meet to participate in our Mock Reading Workshop. This event provides continuing learning opportunities with experienced leadership and colleagues.
February 26 & 27, 2024
Prior to the mock reading, participating teachers administer a mock exam in their respective classrooms. This consists of a full exam with multiple choice and all writing prompts. Multiple choice is scored by the teacher. Question 1 writing is scored by the teacher; AR AIMS offers a complete scoring mini-workshop on how to score the Question 1 essay. Teachers submit all Questions 2 & 3 essays to be scored at the Mock Reading Workshop.
At the Mock Reading Workshop:
Teachers will be trained to deconstruct prompts and apply the new 6 point rubric provided by the College Board to score essays.
Under the instruction of Mock Reading Leadership, teachers will collaborate with other teacher readers at their table to evaluate essays and develop an understanding of targeted instruction to be addressed between the Mock Reading Workshop and the AP Literature and AP exams in May.
Students and teachers will benefit from evaluation of scoring data following the event that will help guide remaining instructional and review time prior to the exam.
Teachers will receive targeted professional development to address student instructional needs for both AP writing and college level writing.
This event is planned and facilitated by the AR AIMS English Contenct Director who is a current AP Reader for the national exam.
Each subject area is led by an experienced Question Leader who is College Board reader currently reading the national exam.
Teachers will work directly with Table Leaders who are experienced College Board readers in their subject areas.
"There is no other PD that offers me what the Reading and Two Day Offer: the camaraderie, the genuine spirit of the majority of teachers, knowledge and experience for anyone who wants to learn something, guidance from teachers who have expertise in noted areas, . . . and so much more. I would be willing to pay for the PD out of my own pocket to be able to attend. (I hope I don't ever have to, but that is how valuable it is to me.)"
"The mock reading is wonderful professional development. Teachers leave feeling better about their students' performance and better about their understanding of the rubric and scoring."
"The reading helps me establish and maintain consistency in my grading. It also offers insight into how actual readers process and evaluate papers, which helps guide my instruction."
"Our table leader was AWESOME! He helped us know what to expect and how to score those issues when we came across them. His experience really encouraged us and made me feel more competent than I had thought myself to be."
"The table leaders did a wonderful job helping readers at their tables. They gave direct guidance and clarification that is best done in small groups. Readers were able to ask specific questions, and table leaders were able to flesh out information shared in our whole group discussion."
"I found it helped me understand my end goal with my kids. I have changed completely the way my classroom runs."
"It truly opened my eyes as to what my students need to work on. That may sound over-simplified, but it's the most accurate way I can put it."
"The Lang question leader did a wonderful job. The method through which we reviewed the rubric really helped me differentiate among the scores. It helped that we read the essays in alphabetical order without knowing the scores of the essays. We only knew they matched even-numbered scores. At first I thought the 6 was an 8; then, I read the 8. I think that method really helped clear up what distinguishes an adequate paper from an effective paper. This is a difficult task: placing an inherently subjective activity onto an objective scale; but, she really helped make it user friendly."
