In this unit your students will learn to graph and summarize one-variable categorical and quantitative data. This unit concludes with an introduction to the Normal distribution.
By the end of Unit 1, students cover 15-23% of the material tested on the AP Statistics Exam. Students will also be able to calculate summary statistics of data sets. After 14-16 class periods (45-50 minutes), about three weeks of the school year, students will know how to take a data set, create graphic displays to visualize the distribution, and use those displays to interpret the data.
With the introduction of the Normal Distribution, the foundation will be laid for statistical inference, the grand prize for the entire course. What students learn here, they will see throughout the course, building on it to create a powerful storehouse of knowledge they can use to solve complex problems wherever they go.
