From the Sustainability Council at the University of Alberta
The Certificate in Sustainability is an undergraduate certificate that is open to students in 10 participating faculties, one of them being the Faculty of Engineering! It recognizes your commitment to learning about sustainability. It is embedded, which means that you can count courses toward both your major and the certificate at the same time.
To earn the certificate, you will take four approved certificate courses, including one core course, one focused course, and two related courses. This course is one of the courses that is approved for the certificate. So, after this class, you will already have completed at least one of the four courses needed for the certificate!
In addition to the course requirements, you also need to complete an independent capstone project on a sustainability topic, which you will do under the guidance of a certificate advisor. After you finish your project, you need to present it at an approved event.
The final requirement is to attend 12 hours of sustainability lectures. Almost all of these lectures are free, and many of them are online. If you enroll in the certificate, you will receive emails notifying you of approved lectures you could attend.
If you’d like to learn more, please visit uab.ca/sustain and click on the Certificate in Sustainability banner. There you will find detailed information about the requirements and upcoming certificate information sessions, as well as a link to enroll in the certificate. If you have any questions, please email Apryl Bergstrom at apryl@ualberta.ca.
