The Steadward Centre in collaboration with the University of Toronto and funded by Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities, completed an interview study of family experiences of inclusive playgrounds across Canada. This study was published in December 2025 in Children's Geographies as Storying the inclusive playground experiences of families of disabled and non-disabled children.
This journal article also led to the creation of an illustrated version of the research findings as a story book or comic book format. This story shares the real experiences of families at playgrounds, created through the stories told to us in the interviews. With the publication of this unique resource, we hope to use the story as a tool to communicate with families, schools, communities, and children about the importance of inclusive playgrounds and what it can feel like for families to play at one. We would like to acknowledge and thank Christina Picton for the original artwork and design! The full illustrated story can be found here
