This project explores innovative strategies to enhance curbside space management and on-street parking efficiency for Edmonton’s residential areas. The research team employs a cutting-edge approach using AI-powered stereo cameras, satellite imagery and a Geographic Information System (GIS) framework. Stereo cameras capture precise, high-resolution images and videos of curbside areas, identifying parked vehicles and infrastructure, while satellite imagery provides a comprehensive view of space availability across neighbourhoods.
This data-driven approach will inform the development of new parking policies, refine existing policies, and highlight opportunities for reallocating curbside space, with particular attention to promoting equity and active, sustainable modes of transportation. Ultimately, this research aims to reduce traffic congestion, mitigate environmental impacts from vehicles, and contribute to Edmonton’s broader goals of creating safer, more sustainable urban environments.
