Sleep Disorder Medicine
Fellowship
The fellowship in Sleep Disorder Medicine is designed for physicians who have completed subspecialty training in Adult Respirology or Adult Psychiatry and want to enhance their scope of practice. Psychiatry residents at the University of Alberta in PGY-4 may complete the fellowship in their PGY-5 year.
The fellowship lasts 1 year and involves exposure to sleep specialists from multiple backgrounds, including: respirology, psychiatry, otolaryngology, neurology, and pediatric sleep medicine. Upon completion of the program, candidates should have skills in managing all primary sleep disorders, such as sleep-disordered breathing, central disorders of hypersomnolence, parasomnias, circadian rhythm disorders, and chronic insomnia disorder. Graduates will receive a fellowship certificate from the University of Alberta.
Although trainees will have exposure to sleep surgery, the program is designed for medical/psychiatric sleep practice and does not include surgical skills training.
