APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
Prerequisites:
Any one of the following:
Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC) or equivalent in Adult Respirology or Adult Psychiatry.
Adult Respirology resident in PGY-5 having obtained the FRCPC in Internal Medicine, in good standing.
Adult Psychiatry resident in PGY-4 at the University of Alberta, in good standing.

Two letters of reference. International sponsored applicants are required to submit three letters of reference.

Application Deadlines:
Canadian applicants: February 1, 2026.
International sponsored applicants: January 1, 2026.
Decisions will be made on a rolling basis and may be finalized well before the application deadlines.

Canadian trainees with a background in Adult Respirology will be expected to provide "return of service" during their training to fund their salaries. This will involve working independently on Fridays at the Kaye Edmonton Clinic, mainly seeing outpatients with obstructive sleep apnea. Return of service billings will be retained by the Sleep program and the fellow will receive a fixed salary via the University of Alberta. As such, Canadian candidates with a background in Adult Respirology must obtain an independent practice license from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta prior to the program start date.
Psychiatry residents at the University of Alberta may complete the fellowship in their PGY-5 year of psychiatry subspecialty training. In this case, their PGY-5 salary will be paid by Alberta Health Services in accordance with the PARA agreement.
International trainees must have institutional or government funding.

English Language Proficiency (ELP) to satisfy the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta through an approved exam
Note: Please review the language requirements. Click here for the CPSA English Language Requirements. Pay particular attention to the exemptions as most international applicants are not exempt from writing an ELP exam.
Note that international sponsored applicants will be required to submit three (3) letters of reference.
