The University of Alberta, its buildings, labs, and research stations are primarily located on the traditional territory of Cree, Blackfoot, Métis, Nakota Sioux, Iroquois, Dene, and Ojibway/Saulteaux/Anishinaabe nations; lands that are now known as part of Treaties 6, 7, and 8 and homeland of the Métis. The University of Alberta respects the sovereignty, lands, histories, languages, knowledge systems, and cultures of First Nations, Métis and Inuit nations.
In this week’s Simon Says, current ELS students introduce the Student Engagement Centre and its weekly activities to the new EAP 135 students, from Study Zone and Writing Workshops to the Conversation Club and Friday Fun.
We also chat about culture shock and well-being, sharing real experiences from Canada, Spain, and China. You’ll even meet Gleb, a former EAP student now playing for the Golden Bears hockey team! Do you know anyone else currently studying with us who is on the team?
Watch to learn how to stay positive, manage culture shock, and get involved on campus.
Bonus:
Mark: “Oh, I finally got around to finishing reading the dictionary. Turns out the zebra did it.”
Did you think it was funny? Why?
In this week’s Simon Says, we met Simon the Bear and saw a new Commons Building with Student Services. Students shared what excites them (snow, new friends) and what worries them (classes, teachers, native speakers). Former EAP students gave tips: speak up, think critically, take clear notes, and be independent. Barbara reminded us to update our Engagement Sites and told us about this week’s theme - academic expectations, plus fun events like a stress workshop, Skoky the therapy puppy, and Halloween chocolate. The message? Stay on track, make friends, and enjoy campus life!
Simon Says – October 20, 2025
In this week’s Simon Says, students share what they are grateful for and reflect on their midterm goals. Lisa offers helpful advice on how to take charge of learning after the midterm. You’ll also hear about upcoming activities, including a guest speaker from the Sustainability Council and Friday Fun thrifting.
This week’s Simon Says is full of energy, goals, and strategies! .Join Barbara, Zuzana, and Vicki as they talk about sticking to fitness goals, share tips from our recent guest speaker on procrastination strategies, and highlight what’s coming up in the Student Engagement Centre (SEC) this week.
Students also share their own ideas, like cleaning their desks, making to-do lists, dancing for relaxation, and brainstorming before writing. You’ll also get important reminders about the writing workshop with a surprise guest, conversation club, and our exciting Friday Fun sports activities. Finally, don’t forget to bring your photos of Indigenous artwork for Wednesday’s seminar.
Watch, listen, and get inspired to stay engaged and reach your goals!
On September 30th, we are honouring the children who were lost in Residential Schools. This dark part of Canadian history is something we want to learn about together. One way to show support is not only by wearing an orange shirt, but also by learning more about this history.
Also, check out what’s happening in the Student Engagement Centre and in your seminar this week. Think about your own goals and your growing autonomy as a student. Choose an activity that interests you and will help you reach your goals.
Watch this week’s Simon Says to learn more. As you watch, think about these questions:
Why are Zuzana and Vicky in the bookstore?
Why might you want to visit the bookstore this week?
What are some topics about Indigenous people that interest students?
What is the seminar going to focus on?
Where is Instructor Pam going to spend Sept. 30?
Happy Fall everyone!
You’ve probably settled into your daily routine by now—so this is the perfect time to think about how you balance school, fun, and meaningful activities.
This week, we’ll share simple strategies to help you manage your time better and introduce some study hacks that really work. Don’t miss Wednesday’s guest speaker, who will give more tips for success.
Bring your friends—the more people join, the more fun it is!

Have you seen our Friday Fun Reels on Instagram? 🥳
A little while ago we asked our former EAP student, Reihaneh, about her transition from the English Language School to university. How did it go, what do you think?
If you are curious about how to practice English outside the classroom, SEC activities offer the easiest option. Make a habit of attending the Conversation Club on Thursdays, and on Fridays, hang out with us as we explore the campus and the community. This way you can make new friends while working on your language skills.
Stay tuned and check out the SEC schedule!

Hello students!
My name is Barbara and I will be one of the 136 Seminar instructors. Fun fact: Zuzana and I started teaching here at the University of Alberta together 13 years ago! Like Zuzana, I am passionate about teaching English and encouraging students to learn as much as they can about their new home in Canada. You are incredibly brave to choose to study abroad, and we want to help you make the most of it.
I look forward to welcoming you in the seminar and seeing you at the various workshops the SEC offers! Together, let's have a great term.
Vicky Chang (she/her)
SEC assistant

Hi, I'm Vicky!
I'm a former ELS student so I know how hard it is to study at university in a second language!
I can share some tips and tricks for making friends, finding fun things to do, and being successful in your classes. I want to help make your time in Canada a great experience!
Come visit me in the SEC (ED 6-138) or email me.
It's me, Simon! Maybe you've seen my famous vlog, Simon Says. I know, these videos are pretty sensational, aren't they? (Especially the ones with me in them!)
My favourite thing to do is posing for pictures with students! I also love playing hide and seek, taking long naps in the winter, and going on adventures around Edmonton. Please take me along with you!
In the SEC, I always enjoy listening to the students practice English during the break. You can always share your secrets with me (but don't worry: I never tell anyone else!).
