ABOUT RECON

ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

ReCon is an annual graduate student retreat and conference that focuses on graduate student research and professional development. It covers topics relevant to students in all phases of their programs. Opportunities for students, staff, and professors to interact in a casual and supportive atmosphere abound. Whether students are new to the faculty or nearing the end of their programs, attendance at ReCon is an extremely valuable interdisciplinary experience that is a lot of fun!

FOUNDATIONS, CONNECTIONS AND COMMUNITY

The Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation includes a wide range of research topics. At RECON XI, we want to celebrate the unified KSR community and the value of our diverse faculty. We also aim to highlight the benefits of graduate research in our faculty: some research involves direct relations with communities; some connects important findings to their users to improve people’s lives through sport, recreation, and leisure; and some research is foundational with the primary goal of enhancing our understanding of the world. Lastly, we wish to highlight the importance of wellness in graduate school. Connections—whether personal or between research groups—that get us out of our cubicles make a more memorable and impactful graduate experience. As such, the theme for RECON XI aims to bring graduate students together through research while building personal connections along the way.

BENEFITS OF ATTENDING

2024 KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Dr. Nancy spencer:

On Becoming a Love(ing) Researcher

Dr. Spencer is committed to understanding what creates meaningful experiences in play, sport (parasport), and recreation for all people, and specifically people who experience marginalization. Her research has primarily engaged with children and youth who experience disability using qualitative methodologies. Recently, her scholarship is becoming more relational and turning toward community-based work, where the voices of communities are centralized.  The best part of her job is working with people, whether it be through teaching, research, or service. In particular, she adores working with undergraduate and graduate students. She loved her own University of Alberta experiences as a student; she did her graduate studies (Masters and PhD) in adapted physical activity in KSR and an undergraduate degree in linguistics in the Faculty of Arts. The world has changed significantly since that time, but one thing has not, our need for connection. If our paths should cross, she hopes to be a part of a great experience for you too.
