On July 2, the Department of Pediatrics hosted our Ice Cream Social to warmly welcome our newest group of residents. It was a fantastic afternoon filled with sunshine, laughter, and plenty of sweet treats. Our Annual Awards Tea is always a very special event; it allows us to come together to celebrate the remarkable achievements of our trainees. The awards we presented not only recognized the outstanding learners in our department—but they also carry profound meaning. Many of the awards were created in memory of individuals whose legacies continue to shape our department and inspire us in our work.
We want to thank the donors who make these awards possible and everyone who helped organize this fantastic event.
Thank you to everyone who joined us for Pediatric Research Day 2025! It was a fantastic day filled with insightful presentations and engaging posters, and our keynote speaker, Dr. Abhilash Rakkunedeth Hareendranathan, got us all thinking about AI in new and exciting ways. And, of course, it wouldn't be a pediatrics event without delicious coffee (thanks to YEG Cappuccino).

We celebrated Administrative Professionals' Day on April 23rd, it was a full day of learning, wellness, and appreciation. The morning featured an engaging session on understanding and managing boundaries and a relaxing afternoon of board games and tote bag painting. It was a meaningful way to recognize the incredible contributions of our administrative and support staff—truly the heart of our department. Thank you for the energy, care, and expertise that you bring to everything you do.
On April 15th, we gathered at the beautiful Alfred H. Savage Centre for our annual Department Retirement Celebration. The evening was filled with laughter, music, delicious food, and heartfelt tributes as we honoured our retiring colleagues and celebrated their outstanding achievements and years of dedicated service. It was a wonderful opportunity to come together as a community to reflect, reconnect, and express our gratitude to those who have helped shape the department over the years.
On February 13th, our department came together for a lively Trivia Night at Arcadia Brewing, complete with great pizza and even better company! We're thrilled to share some snapshots of faculty, staff, and learners enjoying an evening of fun and friendly competition. We want to thank everyone who joined us and give a special shout-out to the Faculty Engagement Committee for organizing such a memorable event. We look forward to many more opportunities to connect and celebrate our vibrant community!
Our department members celebrated the spookiest time of the year in style last month with our Halloween Boo Bash on October 31st. The afternoon was filled with delicious treats, games, and costumes.
Faculty members participated in a Lunch & Learn session on November 25th, where speaker Dr. Vijay Daniels discussed psychological safety and how to foster safe work/learning environments while enjoying some delicious lunch.
Some of our residents were off in the mountains last week during the resident's retreat in Canmore. Enjoying a much-needed break to connect and recharge. The event provided the perfect blend of relaxation and learning, featuring an insightful presentation on maintaining proper nutrition amidst the demands of a busy resident schedule. In addition to informative discussions, participants got creative with some arts and crafts activities!
Members from the department participated in the River Valley Wellness Walk for Mental Health Day this month! It was a great way to get out of the office and into the beautiful fall scenery in the River Valley. Dr. Dwayne Donald facilitated some teaching, allowing us to come together as a community and learn about Indigenous health practices.
Our recent Resident Ice Cream Social was a sweet success! Residents, faculty, and staff came together to enjoy delicious treats from Made by Marcus. We always love a chance to come together and strengthen our department’s sense of community!

Effective Feedback with Dr. Duff
Our Operations Team recently participated in a professional development session led by Dr. Duff, focused on giving and receiving effective feedback. The session provided valuable insights and practical tools to enhance communication and foster growth within the team.
Our Program Directors Committee has the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Daniels to present during their last meeting. The presentation focused on Safety Culture and provided valuable insights into fostering positive culture within our programs.
Back to school means back to Pediatric Grand Rounds! 🍎📚 We've already enjoyed a full month of insightful presentations from guest speakers, residents, and faculty members including guest speaker Karen Mackenzie and faculty member Dr. Grant Bruno. We're excited to continue diving into the new academic year with curiosity and excitement! ✨

We welcomed award recipients, donors, staff, faculty, and their families to the Yorath House for our Annual Awards Tea. Tucked away in the trees, we had a magical afternoon filled with enchanting music from the Vertex String Quartet and delectable treats from Stir Catering.

Our Operations Team braved the hot weather on July 10th in the main quad for the 2024 NASA breakfast. We even managed to snag a table in the shade to our tasty breakfast sandwiches. Can't wait to see what's on the menu next summer!
A huge shout out to our Spring Thaw Committee for putting together an incredibly fun Spring Thaw Challenge and an excellent wrap-up presentation. The event included crowning our winning team, The Sprout Scouts, and engaging the audience in some live challenges. We're already looking forward to doing it all over again next year!
The Operations Team was on a roll this month, with some team-building at Plaza Bowling Co.! While some of us discovered we may not be naturally skilled bowlers, spending time with our amazing co-workers was definitely up our alley!
Our recent “Popsicles on the Patio” event on June 19th, was a refreshing success! Colleagues came together to enjoy sweet treats and chill out under the sun, creating the perfect opportunity to mingle and kick off the summer vibes. The cool conversations and frozen delights made it a fun-filled afternoon, reminding us how great it is to take a break and enjoy each other’s company. Thanks to everyone who joined us for a truly “ice” day!
On Wednesday, June 12, we held a heartfelt farewell for our graduating trainees from the department. Despite the rain, we kept our spirits high with delicious food and lively conversations. It was a memorable event, celebrating our talented trainees' achievements and future journeys!
It was an honor to host Dr Joseph Flynn, a pediatric nephrologist from Seattle Children's Hospital, for a captivating presentation at Pediatric Grand Rounds on May 9th. Dr Flynn not only enlightened us with his profound insights into the lifelong significance of blood pressure tracking from childhood to adulthood but also underscored the critical connection between childhood blood pressure and adult cardiovascular health. Our morning was made even more delightful with a scrumptious breakfast spread by Geedes Catering. It was indeed a morning of nourishment for both the mind and the body!
Faculty Trivia Night - Our esteemed faculty members showed their competitive spirit at Arcadia Brewery on April 18th. The evening was filled with laughter, camaraderie, and impressive displays of knowledge!
May the 4th - We had a special screening event where we celebrated the Star Wars universe. We enjoyed delicious snacks and immersed ourselves in a galactic lunch hour that even Chewbacca would have appreciated!
On Wednesday, April 17th, we held our annual pediatric research day. We were delighted to welcome many excellent presenters and our keynote speaker, Dr Deena Hinshaw. The day was filled with innovative research, fun activities like our bracelet-making station (which was a hit), and a raffle with fantastic U of A swag. Congratulations to all our presenters, and a huge thank you to all the staff and volunteers who made the day so incredible!
On Wednesday, March 20th we celebrated International Day of Happiness by getting groovy and boogieing around with our "Happiness Cart" filled with treats and prizes around the department. It was out of sight! We can't wait to top ourselves next year, you dig?
The Department of Pediatrics hosted TGIF on Friday February 16th for the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry! The evening was filled with toe-tapping tunes from the U of A Jazz Band, tantalizing eats from our friends at Stir, and cocktails so enchanting they must have been mixed by a wizard!
A round of applause goes to the Pediatrics Operations Team who helped with the setup, which included taking on the daring task of moving a balloon arch from ECHA to the Katz Atrium - talk about a party parade! And finally we want to say a heartfelt thank you to all the department and faculty members who attended the fun, making it an evening we won’t soon forget.
