In 1861, Nettie Maria Stevens became the third born child of Ephraim Stevens and Julia Adams (Ogilvie and Choquette 1981). After the death of her mother in 1863, her father Ephraim remarried and moved his family from Cavendish, Vermont to Westford, Massachusetts. Stevens grew up in a socioeconomically upper middle class family and was fortunate enough to attend school, living in an area where education was geographically and financially accessible (Ogilvie and Choquette 1981).
Westford Academy public school (Ogilvie and Choquette 1981)
Dr. Nettie Maria Stevens’ early education in Westford public school painted a clear picture of a remarkable student with near perfect attendance, who was also on the honour roll (Ogilvie and Choquette 1981). She was then admitted to Westford academy, a college preparatory school well known for its statement that "school should be free of any nationality, age, or sex". The graduate classes from 1872-1883 at Westford Academy contained only eleven college preparatory graduates. Nettie and her sister Emma were among those eleven. Both sisters went into teaching, representing two of three females graduates who went on to more formal college education (Ogilvie and Choquette 1981).
