We chose to perform the choral arrangement “For Good” to demonstrate the requirement of adaptation of in-person activities to a digital/virtual format in order to remain safe during the COVID-19 Pandemic. The changes we’ve all had to make in order to stay safe have been an invaluable lesson in how those with chronic illness must adapt in everyday life. As we sing “For Good”, we thank our PIE Mentors for all they have shared and taught us, in the hopes that we have changed for the better both as people and as physicians.

We aim to explore how the world is built for able-bodied people while being actively uncomfortable and hostile toward people living with disabilities. We will represent this with a real estate tour video of “Hostile Architecture House,” a hypothetical apartment designed to mimic the lack of accessibility in architecture from the perspective of a non-disabled person. This is meant to both mimic our PIE mentors’ experiences with a design that is hostile towards people with disabilities and to showcase the problems with hostile architecture more generally. The imagined outcome of this project is that the audience reflects on how design elements shape the built environment and determine who is it accessible to. We want our audience to watch the video and envision design elements that could replace the hostile architecture to make more inclusive spaces.

We are told to always remember the individual we are treating, to see them not as a list of diagnoses on a chart but as a human being with wants, desires, dreams, and fears. But how do we understand the individual context when the scale of the disease is so massive it almost defies reason. I chose to literally "put a face to the name(s)" using Sir Thomas Moore and obituary records from the New York Times, in hopes of providing some means to understand the scale of the pandemic's casualties and the individuals' burden. Look closely at the names, and the face emerges.

“Come with me and you will soon see what it means to be just me.” We’d like to introduce you to Ethan, who’s going to tell us all about what a day in his life is like as a child who has diabetes. While we are taught the importance of not treating our patients only for their illness, we never thought that we would find such inspiration in their bravery and resilience.

Art as Advocacy: The Perspective of a Patient Mentor

Michael Frost | Artist/Advocate, & MD Program Patient Mentor since 2017

Michael Frost is an artist, advocate, caregiver, and autistic person. As an "artivist", his practice consists of digital collage, digital storytelling, creative writing, public speaking, and contributing to health professions education. Michael writes and creates visual art to make sense of his world for himself and others, with a particular focus on issues of consent to receiving health care, health care for persons with invisible disabilities, community living, participation in society, and belonging.You can view some of Michael's work via his Youtube Channel, "Sculpting Thought Sculpting Dialogue", as well as examples of his contributions to ongoing collaborative dialogue at the University of Alberta and beyond - including as part of the AHHM Occasional Speaker Series - both in 2017, and published in the online journal Spectrum in 2020.
