We designed a deck of cards highlighting 52 barriers to accessible health care in Canada. Our project exposes the precarious balance between patient care and health outcomes. “Health Care’s House of Cards” focuses on the myriad factors that for the most part fall beyond a patient’s control, but which exert an undue influence on a patients’ well-being and risk inadvertently toppling their own health as easily as a single breath might topple a house of cards. We also wanted to juxtapose the frivolity of a card game with the often deadly seriousness of inadequate health-care access, highlighting that what for some may be a scheduled appointment, for others may be a life-changing experience.
