Our patient mentors taught us that a diagnosis is just the beginning of a challenging learning process. The patient must become fluent in the medical vernacular surrounding his or her disease. He or she must acquire new skills and navigate a new life, often with modified routines and altered plans. In our video, three patients receive diagnoses from their physicians while the medical supplies that will become fixtures of their daily lives are painted on canvas. Meanwhile, a young girl learns to ride a bike. We hope to convey that learning to manage a chronic disease, like learning to ride a bike, can be overwhelming; but it can be done with enough courage, resolve, and support.
