Marthe Gautier wrote a M.D. thesis named Fatal forms of rheumatic fever in children when she studied at Harvard University. The topic of this thesis focused on the clinical and post mortem anatomy and pathology of the heart affected by rheumatic fever (Engel 2013). When Marthe Gautier stopped working on Down syndrome and left Turpin's group, she chose to continue studying cardiac pediatrics. In 1967, she joined INSERM (French National Institute of Health and Medical Research Institute) as Director to Research (Engel 2013). Thus, Marthe Gautier's whole life became devoted to the study of congenital mechanical and metabolic abnormalities infants and children.
