Duties include attending three board meetings each year, preparing a one-page ACFP feedback report and attend the monthly FMRA meetings.

PARA

PARA is our residency association and is actively involved in advocating for residents in contract negotiations and workforce planning discussions. PARA works in conjunction with the Alberta Medical Association, the Canadian Medical Association, Alberta Health Services and other partners to further education, foster teaching and provide safe and equitable conditions for residents. PARA also holds a number of social events (FREE) throughout the year. There are four PARA meetings a year (two in Calgary, two in Edmonton) and representatives are expected to attend monthly FMRA meetings.

Practice Management

Helps coordinate educational events about transitioning to practice including Billing and Contract Negotiation. Sits on the First Five Years in Practice (FFYP) committee within the Alberta College of Family Physicians (ACFP).

The Advanced Skills committee organizes various workshops and courses for residents including ALARM (Advances in Labour and Risk Management), LEAP (Learning Essential Approaches to Palliative and End of Life Care), CASTED, and Point of Care Ultrasound (EDE).

They host regular simulation sessions with interested residents to cover topics like shock, coma, ACLS, trauma and more.

Academic Planning

Ideally, the person who takes on this role will sit on the committee in their first year and then follow the academic changes that develop through the committee into their second year. Residents on this committee will be involved in organizing the Research Day in June, and promoting researching initiatives. Being on this committee is a great way to find out about the research activities going on in the Family Medicine Department. The reps meet with the Research Committee once a month (first Thursday), and a section of the meeting is dedicated to the residents. The reps are expected to distribute information regarding faculty and resident research to other residents. Reps are also expected to attend the monthly FMRA meetings.
