The primary goal of this project is to develop and test simulation modules to train clinicians, nurses and operational leaders to counter racism and inequities in care for Indigenous patients in Alberta emergency departments. Modules are largely based in results of the FN Quality of Care in ED project.
In this project, our aim is to link new simulation modules to evidence generated in previous work, and to educational and anti-racist theory, in partnership with Indigenous organizations and community partners. Additionally, we will identify barriers and factors that aid in the dissemination and evaluation of equity-oriented simulation training around Alberta.
Co-leadership by Principal Investigator Patrick McLane, Ghazwan Altabbaa and Pamela Roach of University of Calgary, and Lea Bill for AFNIGC, along with direction from a Steering Committee comprising community knowledge users from different First Nations organizations and co-investigators from the University of Alberta, University of Calgary and AHS leaders. Importantly, the Métis Nation of Alberta (MNA) will help to ensure that this work will address Métis experiences and care expectations as well.

Indigenous Directed Simulation Training for Anti-Racism in Emergency Departments
This session provides an overview of the Anti-Racism Simulation in Emergency Departments project developed with Indigenous partners and recently tested with emergency care clinicians in one rural, and one urban site in Alberta. Panelists describe the project background and preliminary findings, and discuss their experience developing and delivering the simulation sessions.
This session was presented as part of 2025 National Indigenous Peoples Month.
