Dr. Isabelle Chiu received her MD from the University of Toronto. This was followed by an Internal Medicine residency and an Infectious Diseases subspecialty training at the University of Alberta. In addition to her clinical practice in the Edmonton area, Dr. Chiu has led many initiatives in the infectious diseases field including guideline development and program planning and implementation on local and national levels.
She is an active medical educator within the Department of Medicine and the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, for both undergraduate and postgraduate trainees. She has also been involved with education on the national level through her work with the Association of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Canada (AMMI Canada) and was Chair of the Program Planning Committee and Co-Chair of the Scientific Planning Committee for the association’s annual conference for eight years. For her many contributions to AMMI Canada, Dr. Chiu was given the Award of Distinction and named Fellow of AMMI Canada (FAMMI) in 2023. Dr. Chiu was named Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (FIDSA)) in 2019 for her contributions to medical education and excellent patient care. Dr. Chiu has held many other leadership roles locally, provincially and nationally.
Dr. Chiu assumed the role of Adult Infectious Diseases Program Director at the University of Alberta in 2020 and led the program successfully through the transition to Competence Based Medical Education.
