Dr. Stephanie Smith, Professor
Dr. Smith is a professor at the University of Alberta in the division of Infectious Diseases. She took over as section head and director of the Division of Infectious diseases in October, 2024.
She is also the Director of Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) for the University of Alberta Hospital and the Mazankowski Heart Institute and the Medical Director of IPAC in the Edmonton Zone. She is a member of the Canadian Hospital Epidemiology Committee and co-chair of the Canadian Nosocomial Infection Surveillance Prorgram (CNISP).
Dr. Smith is on a number of national and provincial guideline committees related to infection control practices to prevent the spread of antimicrobial resistant pathogens.
Dr Smith is involved in medical education at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels and served as the program director for the infectious diseases training program at the University of Alberta Hospital for nine years.
Her research interests include the epidemiology and prevention of hospital acquired infections. She also acts as site PI for a variety of clinical trials investigating optimal therapy for common infectious disease syndromes.
